Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel. Isaiah 7:14
The virgin birth of Jesus Christ, I believe is an essential doctrine of Christianity. Why? Well first in order for Jesus to remain sinless as a human, he needed to be born without sin. Jesus was conceived by the Holy Spirit in the womb of Mary. Therefor Jesus is the Son of God, not the Son of a Man. If Jesus was conceived by a Man, then the sinful nature of that bloodline would have corrupted Christ
When we look at the Apostles Creed , we see that the Virgin Birth is stated there. Why? Because the early Church considered it to be an essential doctrine of Christianity. If the Virgin Birth wasn’t important, then it most likely wouldn’t have been listed on the Apostles Creed. The Creed is a statement of shared beliefs of a community. The Virgin Birth is also listed in other Creeds
I believe in God, the Father almighty,
creator of heaven and earth.
I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord.
He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit
and born of the virgin Mary.
In the scriptures , Israel is under attack, however God tells the prophet Isaiah to tell King Ahaz he would send a sign of Israel’s redemption. That sign is a Son (Jesus) to be born of a Virgin. Now one of the arguments is the original Hebrew word translated as Virgin is “Haalmah”. This word can be translated as “Young girl”, “Maid”, “Damsel”, or “Virgin” There’s obviously been a lot of scholarly work done on this issue, you can research on YouTube. However most Hebrew scholars would agree the correct translation would be “Virgin” for this passage. Knowing the Jewish culture during this time, a young girl would still be a virgin if unmarried, because typically premarital sex was not common due to the strict penalties and their faith in God
Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us Matthew 1:23
The Apostle Matthew documents the fulfillment of this prophecy being Jesus Christ. Now notice the title given to Christ in both of these passages “Immanuel” (Emmanuel) This title means God is With Us! Meaning God became human and lived among us (John 1:14)
God with us in the flesh experienced our weakness, yet, without sin, and revealing the glory of the Father. No greater love…
