Luke 6- Don’t Judge Me?

Judge not, and ye shall not be judged: condemn not, and ye shall not be condemned: forgive, and ye shall be forgiven: Give, and it shall be given unto you; good measure, pressed down, and shaken together, and running over, shall men give into your bosom. For with the same measure that ye mete withal it shall be measured to you again. Luke 6:37-38

Often you will hear Christians say “Don’t judge me!” or you have no right to judge people? So is this correct theology? Well sort of, first issue is people often stop with verse 37 and don’t read the rest of the paragraph to get the full context of Jesus teaching. First thing to say we don’t judge anyone would be hypocritical. Its human nature to judge people, as soon as someone walks in the room , you are already making judgements, which we get the concept of “first impressions”

Now am I saying we should go around condemning people of their sin, no of course not. Most people are not even Christian or believe in God, so condemning people by the law of God wouldnt be very logical if they don’t first believe in God. Secondly , if you are a Christian, think about how you were before you were saved. You probably were a sinner like me, who didn’t really understand or know right from wrong until you found Jesus.

Notice Jesus says “For the same measure you judge, you will be judged also” Have some compassion and mercy on the unsaved, they might not even realize that they are sinning to begin with, lead them to Jesus and let the Holy Spirit convict them of their sin!

And he spake a parable unto them, Can the blind lead the blind? shall they not both fall into the ditch? The disciple is not above his master: but every one that is perfect shall be as his master. And why beholdest thou the mote that is in thy brother’s eye, but perceivest not the beam that is in thine own eye? Either how canst thou say to thy brother, Brother, let me pull out the mote that is in thine eye, when thou thyself beholdest not the beam that is in thine own eye? Thou hypocrite, cast out first the beam out of thine own eye, and then shalt thou see clearly to pull out the mote that is in thy brother’s eye. Luke 6:39-42

Now Jesus’ second part of this teaching is “Don’t be a hypocrite” Don’t tell someone to follow Jesus if your living in sin yourself. Don’t point out the speck (sin) in someones eye when you have a log (greater sin) in your own eye. Practice what you preach! How can the blind (sinner) lead the blind (sinner). So before you are going to judge someone, stop and reflect upon yourself, are you really able to make this judgement?

The reality is judgement is a part of life, you can tell people not to judge you, however in the end God is going to judge you regardless. Are you ready to stand before God with the wages of your life? The only way to be ready is to be cleansed by the blood of Jesus Christ and baptised by the Holy Spirit! Get right with God, come to Jesus and be able to stand in judgement Amen!

Luke 6- Love Your Enemies

But I say unto you which hear, Love your enemies, do good to them which hate you, Bless them that curse you, and pray for them which despitefully use you. And unto him that smiteth thee on the one cheek offer also the other; and him that taketh away thy cloke forbid not to take thy coat also. Give to every man that asketh of thee; and of him that taketh away thy goods ask them not again. And as ye would that men should do to you, do ye also to them likewise.Luke 6:27-31

If you think being a Christian is easy, think again! It’s easy to love your family or maybe even your neighbor, but to love your enemy is extremely difficult. Jesus even goes on to say “If someone strikes you on one side of the face, let them strike you on the other side”,  what!? This goes against our human nature, we don’t want anyone to get the best of us or to disrespect us! Now are we starting to see how difficult it is to be a Christian!

Jesus says “If anyone asks for something, give it to them, and don’t even expect it back in return” Often when we donate or lend something to someone, we expect something in return. We want recognition or repayment, we want everyone to pat us on the back for doing something good. We shouldn’t expect any of this, just give it away!

Jesus is setting the standard for Christian living, how many of us fall short of this lifestyle? Probably all of us , if were being honest, Lord have mercy on us! But this is the standard Christ has set for us, and we should strive to get to this standard that Jesus expects of us. “Do unto others as you would have them do to you”!

For if ye love them which love you, what thank have ye? for sinners also love those that love them. And if ye do good to them which do good to you, what thank have ye? for sinners also do even the same. And if ye lend to them of whom ye hope to receive, what thank have ye? for sinners also lend to sinners, to receive as much again. But love ye your enemies, and do good, and lend, hoping for nothing again; and your reward shall be great, and ye shall be the children of the Highest: for he is kind unto the unthankful and to the evil.Be ye therefore merciful, as your Father also is merciful. Luke 6:32-36

You say well I love my family and I’ll give to those who are worthy, but Jesus says so what! Even the unsaved love their families and even the unsaved give to charity, so why do you think your better than them? Christ is demanding a higher standard for us! Jesus delivered you from sin and death, so go the extra mile, carry your cross, and follow Christ!

Jesus says “Expect Nothing in return” , wow we should just love and give with no strings attached, imagine the concept. Christ died for us , even when we still were sinners and wicked (Romans 5:8)  Be merciful because God is merciful

So do you think its easy being a Christian now? No, this is why we need Jesus every moment, every minute, every second of our lives. Without the Holy Spirit we can do nothing to please God, go the extra mile, love those who even hate your guys, give to those who dont even deserve it, put all your faith and trust in Jesus Christ , Amen!

Luke 6- The Beatitudes

And he lifted up his eyes on his disciples, and said, Blessed be ye poor: for yours is the kingdom of God. Blessed are ye that hunger now: for ye shall be filled. Blessed are ye that weep now: for ye shall laugh. Blessed are ye, when men shall hate you, and when they shall separate you from their company, and shall reproach you, and cast out your name as evil, for the Son of man’s sake. Rejoice ye in that day, and leap for joy: for, behold, your reward is great in heaven: for in the like manner did their fathers unto the prophets Luke 6:20-23

Here we take a look at Jesus “sermon on the mount” or also known as the “Beatitudes”, now this can also be found in the gospel of Matthew 5, some people believe these Beatitudes are really the total summarization of the Torah. However you interpret them, these are the standards Christ has laid out for our lives. I think it’s important when you interpret them, that you look at them from a spiritual perspective and not just a physical

We see this clearly when Jesus says we are blessed because we are poor, hungry, mourning, and hated. Now obviously from a natural perspective this makes no sense, however from a spiritual perspective , it makes perfect sense. As I explain in my commentary on the Beatitudes, Jesus is talking about God’s Kingdom to come (Revelation 21, Isaiah 65) the New Heavens and Earth, where there will be no more pain, no more sorrow, no more death! So those “poor in spirit” or suffering can rejoice, because Christ has delivered them!

Same thing will those who “hunger for righteousness” , God is just and the redeemer. He is going to bring justice to the world, there will no longer be corruption or persecution from a wicked government. God is making all things New (Revelation 21). As Jesus says “Great is your reward in Heaven” , God knows your pain, He knows your persecution, He knows your suffering, when Christ returns He is going to bring true Justice and Peace to the world through the King of Kings and Lord of Lords , Jesus Christ!

But woe unto you that are rich! for ye have received your consolation Woe unto you that are full! for ye shall hunger. Woe unto you that laugh now! for ye shall mourn and weep. Woe unto you, when all men shall speak well of you! for so did their fathers to the false prophets. Luke 6:24-27

But now comes the “Woes” , when you see the word Woe in the Bible, it’s basically the greatest proclamation of judgement upon someone. Who are condemned? Basically those who love this world and hate God. Don’t put your faith in your money, or your job, or your government, your faith needs to be in Christ alone! Only Jesus can save your soul, nothing in this world can, and everything in this world is temporary and will eventually fade away. Jesus is giving and declaring eternal hope for his people and condemnation upon the world

Christ is coming back soon, those who love this world are enemies of God (1 John 2:15) Be prepared for The Lord’s return, get Born Again through Christ and the Holy Spirit. Walk in the newness of life, serving the Lord and not yourself, keep your lamps lit Amen!

Luke 6- Lord of The Sabbath

And it came to pass on the second sabbath after the first, that he went through the corn fields; and his disciples plucked the ears of corn, and did eat, rubbing them in their hands. And certain of the Pharisees said unto them, Why do ye that which is not lawful to do on the sabbath days? And Jesus answering them said, Have ye not read so much as this, what David did, when himself was an hungred, and they which were with him; How he went into the house of God, and did take and eat the shewbread, and gave also to them that were with him; which it is not lawful to eat but for the priests alone? And he said unto them, That the Son of man is Lord also of the sabbath. Luke 6:1-5

One of the many titles of Jesus we probably dont think about that much is “Lord of the Sabbath ” , what does that mean? Well when the religious leaders decided to accuse Jesus and his disciples of “breaking the Sabbath” he decided to reveal some things to them. First Jesus references a story about David, who actually ate the showbread from the Temple, which is against the Torah

However, how many Jews today point out that David broke the Torah? Most Rabbis won’t mention this as David is highly regarded by the Jews. The point Jesus is making is, these religious leaders are hypocrites! The rabbis want to call out Jesus and his disciples from eating corn on the Sabbath, but yet are ok with David eating the holy showbread from the Temple.

Jesus revealed to them , He is the Son of Man (Daniel 7) and He is the Lord of the Sabbath! Jesus can’t “break the Sabbath” because Jesus is the Sabbath, Jesus is our Rest (Hebrews 4, Matthew 11:28)

And it came to pass also on another sabbath, that he entered into the synagogue and taught: and there was a man whose right hand was withered. And the scribes and Pharisees watched him, whether he would heal on the sabbath day; that they might find an accusation against him. But he knew their thoughts, and said to the man which had the withered hand, Rise up, and stand forth in the midst. And he arose and stood forth. Then said Jesus unto them, I will ask you one thing; Is it lawful on the sabbath days to do good, or to do evil? to save life, or to destroy it? Luke 6:6-9

Then Jesus did an unimaginable thing, note the sarcasm, he healed a man on the Sabbath! Now a few things here, first Jesus is revealing his deity by healing the man, secondly , Jesus is revealing he is Lord of the Sabbath, by “breaking the Sabbath” to heal a man

Notice Jesus knows the evil thoughts of the religious leaders and calls them out on it. Jesus says “Is it lawful on the Sabbath to do good or evil”? The Sabbath is not a legalistic issue its a moral issue

And looking round about upon them all, he said unto the man, Stretch forth thy hand. And he did so: and his hand was restored whole as the other. And they were filled with madness; and communed one with another what they might do to Jesus. Luke 6:10-11

Now notice the religious leader’s reaction here, Jesus healed a man, and instead of them praising God , they were “filled with madness” , they were enraged because Jesus healed on the Sabbath, do you think their hearts are right with God? And instead of understanding that the Son of Man, the Christ was standing right before them, they plotted to kill the Lord of the Sabbath

Many people still today, try to make the Sabbath a legal issue. Where is your heart? If Jesus healed on the Sabbath , are you going to condemn him also? Jesus is Lord of The Sabbath, and Lord over You! Find your rest in Christ, and not in legalism Amen!

Luke 5- New Wine

And he spake also a parable unto them; No man putteth a piece of a new garment upon an old; if otherwise, then both the new maketh a rent, and the piece that was taken out of the new agreeth not with the old. And no man putteth new wine into old bottles; else the new wine will burst the bottles, and be spilled, and the bottles shall perish. Luke 5:36-37

Jesus said in John 3 “You must be Born Again to see the Kingdom of Heaven” well I believe this parable is teaching about the same concept. Of course before we can interpret the parable, we need to understand the concept of the parable. In the first century it was practice to store their “new wine” into a new wine skin. When the wine was gone, they threw away the old wine skin, they didn’t reuse it for new wine again

Jesus was using this parable to reflect upon our conversions of becoming Born Again. The New Wine represents the Holy Spirit. It reminds us of Jesus first miracle , when he turned water into wine, this was the beginning of his ministry, this was the beginning of the New Covenant. God can’t pour New Wine into Old Wine Skins. The Holy Spirit must dwell in a Holy Space, you must become Born Again to see Heaven

Notice Jesus says “and the bottles shall perish” the old wine skins will perish. Unless you are Born Again through Jesus Christ, you will perish. You must become Born Again, you must become a New Creation, you must have a New Wineskin to pour the Holy Spirit upon You!

But new wine must be put into new bottles; and both are preserved. No man also having drunk old wine straightway desireth new: for he saith, The old is better. Luke 5:38-39

The New Wine (Holy Spirit) must be poured into New Bottles (Born Again) God can’t be in the presence of Sin, you must become Born Again to be saved (John 3) Jesus demonstrates this illustration with wine. As the Bible says “Get drunk on the Holy Spirit” (Ephesians 5:18) Anyone who has become Born Again never wants to go back to their carnal self. Anyone who falls away has never been Born Again to begin with

We can’t work our way into Heaven, we can’t earn our salvation, we must become Born Again. The New Wine , the Holy Spirit will be poured out inside of you by our Lord Jesus Christ! Are you preparing yourself to be made new by Christ? Amen!

Luke 5- Healed or Forgiven?

And, behold, men brought in a bed a man which was taken with a palsy: and they sought means to bring him in, and to lay him before him. And when they could not find by what way they might bring him in because of the multitude, they went upon the housetop, and let him down through the tiling with his couch into the midst before Jesus. And when he saw their faith, he said unto him, Man, thy sins are forgiven thee. Luke 5:18-20

Here we see Jesus preaching at a house, however so many people came to hear and see Jesus, that there was standing room only. A group of men brought a disabled men to see Jesus to be healed, however they couldn’t even get through the front door because of the crowd. So they decided to drop the man through the straw roof of the building , to the feet of Christ

Now an amazing event happens here, not only does Jesus instantly heal the disabled man, but Jesus makes the statement “Your sins are forgiven” what? As you can imagine, when the religious leaders heard this, they were angry, who can forgive sin but God alone? This is exactly what Jesus is revealing here, he is God in the flesh, he is more than just a prophet

And the scribes and the Pharisees began to reason, saying, Who is this which speaketh blasphemies? Who can forgive sins, but God alone? But when Jesus perceived their thoughts, he answering said unto them, What reason ye in your hearts? Whether is easier, to say, Thy sins be forgiven thee; or to say, Rise up and walk? Luke 5:21-23

The religious leaders accused Jesus of blasphemy, who does this man think he is? Only God can forgive sin, so what is Jesus saying here? Jesus answered them and said “What is easier to forgive sin or heal someone”? See Jesus can do both, forgive and heal, why? Because He is the Son of God, the Great I AM, God in the flesh

But that ye may know that the Son of man hath power upon earth to forgive sins, (he said unto the sick of the palsy,) I say unto thee, Arise, and take up thy couch, and go into thine house. And immediately he rose up before them, and took up that whereon he lay, and departed to his own house, glorifying God. And they were all amazed, and they glorified God, and were filled with fear, saying, We have seen strange things to day. Luke 5:24-26

Notice Jesus references himself as the Son of Man, the fulfillment of Daniel 7, Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God. And Jesus revealed he has all power and authority in Heaven and on Earth to heal and forgive sin, eternal life is only possible through Christ alone

The question is “How are you going to respond to this news today?” Are you going to rejoice and receive Christ like many in the crowd? Or is your heart hardened like the religious leaders and perish in your sins? Jesus is willing and able to save you, get off your mat in walk Amen!

Luke 5- Lepers Prayer

And it came to pass, when he was in a certain city, behold a man full of leprosy: who seeing Jesus fell on his face, and besought him, saying, Lord, if thou wilt, thou canst make me clean. And he put forth his hand, and touched him, saying, I will: be thou clean. And immediately the leprosy departed from him. Luke 5:12-13

Here we see a man covered in Leprosy coming to Jesus and begging for his healing! Now at first glance, you might say “This really has nothing to do with me” but at a second glance you need to understand you are the Leper. From a spiritual perspective, we are all Lepers, we are all sinners and unclean before a Holy God. The only way our souls can be cleansed is by the blood of Jesus Christ!

From an Old Covenant perspective, what the Leper was doing was unlawful. An unclean man couldn’t come in contact with a “clean” person, especially a Rabbi, the Son of God. But this is just a revelation of the New Covenant, where Christ can make us clean! The only thing that would save this man is Jesus, and the only thing that is going to save us is Jesus, period!

Notice the man’s approach to Christ, “He fell on his face” he cried out to The Lord with godly sorrow and humility. And notice Jesus’ response “He touched him”. Again this is not lawful under the Mosaic Covenant, Jesus can’t be touching unclean things, but Christ is instituting a New Covenant, that will set the captives free and make us clean!

And he charged him to tell no man: but go, and shew thyself to the priest, and offer for thy cleansing, according as Moses commanded, for a testimony unto them. But so much the more went there a fame abroad of him: and great multitudes came together to hear, and to be healed by him of their infirmities. And he withdrew himself into the wilderness, and prayed. Luke 5:14-16

Jesus did a strange thing , he told the man “but tell no one I healed you” We see this throughout his ministry, Jesus didn’t want them to know he was behind the healing, why? Because he wanted everyone to come to Christ on their own initiative. Jesus even rebuked the demons of speaking about him, because he wanted the people to truly seek him with their hearts

But even so , the fame about Jesus spread everywhere! But many people came to Jesus for the miracles and not for the Miracle Worker! And Jesus needed to withdrawal in the wilderness, to be alone with our Heavenly Father, so he can remain in His Will and not the will of the people

We all have spiritual leprosy, are you seeking Jesus for a cleansing? Are you on your face to The Lord asking for his mercy? Seek the Great Physician and you shall be healed, give your life to Christ and he will give you eternal life Amen!

Luke 5- Fisher of Men

And saw two ships standing by the lake: but the fishermen were gone out of them, and were washing their nets. And he entered into one of the ships, which was Simon’s, and prayed him that he would thrust out a little from the land. And he sat down, and taught the people out of the ship. Now when he had left speaking, he said unto Simon, Launch out into the deep, and let down your nets for a draught. And Simon answering said unto him, Master, we have toiled all the night, and have taken nothing: nevertheless at thy word I will let down the net. Luke 5:2-5

Imagine this, your a professional fisherman and you’ve been fishing all night, then some stranger walks up to you and says “Hey why don’t you put the net on the other side of the boat” You’re first reaction is probably curse words we can’t repeat, however Peter was respectful to Jesus and did as he said.

What was happening here? Jesus is not only going to select his first Apostles, but he’s going to teach Peter about faith and obedience. Jesus knows what he told Peter doesnt make any logical sense, however he wanted to test Peter and see if he would be obedient and faithful to his commands

And when they had this done, they inclosed a great multitude of fishes: and their net brake. And they beckoned unto their partners, which were in the other ship, that they should come and help them. And they came, and filled both the ships, so that they began to sink. When Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus’ knees, saying, Depart from me; for I am a sinful man, O Lord. Luke 5:6-8

Notice what happened when Peter listened to The Lord’s instructions, he caught so many fish , he needed multiple men to bring in the nets. Once Peter realized who Jesus is , notice his reaction. Peter fell on his knees and said “I am a sinful man, O Lord” this is a true display of repentance. Have you ever went to your knees in true repentance and declared who Jesus is?

For he was astonished, and all that were with him, at the draught of the fishes which they had taken: And so was also James, and John, the sons of Zebedee, which were partners with Simon. And Jesus said unto Simon, Fear not; from henceforth thou shalt catch men. And when they had brought their ships to land, they forsook all, and followed him. Luke 5:9-11

But lets not miss the message Jesus was trying to convey with the miracle. Peter was now called to be an Apostle of Christ, to catch people instead of fish! How? By preaching the gospel, hence the symbolism of the fishing net. And the Apostles were not going to just catch a few people, they were going to start a revolution called the Church, which the gates of Hell will never prevail against it

Jesus called Peter and the other Apostles , and they answered , following Christ! Are you being called today? Are you a Fisher of Men? Time is running short, build Gods Kingdom and save souls in Jesus name Amen!

Luke 4- Demons Tremble

And in the synagogue there was a man, which had a spirit of an unclean devil, and cried out with a loud voice, Saying, Let us alone; what have we to do with thee, thou Jesus of Nazareth? art thou come to destroy us? I know thee who thou art; the Holy One of God. And Jesus rebuked him, saying, Hold thy peace, and come out of him. And when the devil had thrown him in the midst, he came out of him, and hurt him not. Luke 4:33-35

It’s pretty interesting, at the beginning of Jesus ministry, when he had yet revealed to people that He is the Christ, the demons already knew! Notice the title they referred to Jesus “The Holy One of God” this is a Messianic reference (Psalm 16:10) The demons knew that Jesus is the Son of God and he had the power and authority to destroy them, that’s why they begged Christ to leave them alone

Notice also , when Jesus commanded the demons, they were in subjection to Him. Its not because the demons wanted to comply to Christ or they followed him, its because they had no choice! Jesus is King of Kings and Lord of Lords (Revelation 19:16) Every knee will bow to Jesus and every tongue will confess that Jesus is Lord (Philippians 2) When are people going to realize this, Jesus is Lord of All

Additionally this is a demonstration or display of the New Covenant, the power of Christ being revealed. Never before did anyone exorcise demons or have authority over them, only Jesus Christ! This is why the New Covenant, is a Better Covenant, a more powerful Covenant, through Jesus Christ!

And they were all amazed, and spake among themselves, saying, What a word is this! for with authority and power he commandeth the unclean spirits, and they come out. And the fame of him went out into every place of the country round about. Luke 4:36-37

Never before, did anyone ever see anything like this, the demons were in submission to Christ! Jesus spoke with power and authority, almost like he was the living Word of God (John1) , because He is!  And quickly the fame and gospel of Christ spread everywhere, God’s kingdom was coming here on Earth

The kingdom of darkness is now defeated, Jesus crushed the head of Satan at the cross! Time is running out, for Satan and his demons, and all those who havent received Christ as your Lord and Savior! The New Covenant is here, The Christ has come to bring us salvation!

Every knee will now and every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, even the demons will bow, even Satan will bow, everyone will bow to the Lord Jesus Amen!

Luke 4- Hometown Hero?

And he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up: and, as his custom was, he went into the synagogue on the sabbath day, and stood up for to read. And there was delivered unto him the book of the prophet Esaias. And when he had opened the book, he found the place where it was written, The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised, To preach the acceptable year of the Lord. And he closed the book, and he gave it again to the minister, and sat down. And the eyes of all them that were in the synagogue were fastened on him. And he began to say unto them, This day is this scripture fulfilled in your ears. Luke 4:16-21

What is the gospel or the good news of Jesus Christ? The Lord makes it clear hear by reading the prophecy of Isaiah 61, to tell the good news to the poor, to heal the brokenhearted, to deliver the captives, to make the spiritually blind see, to make the all free from sin and death! The gospel was foretold by the prophet Isaiah, and Jesus fulfilled it all

Now when Jesus said “Today this scripture has been fulfilled” this caused an uproar in Nazareth. Why? Because Jesus was declaring that He is the long awaited Messiah, He is the Son of God who became flesh, He is the one all the prophets including Isaiah was talking about! Instead of the religious leaders rejoicing that the Messiah has come, their hearts were hardened, and their ears were closed and they rejected the Christ

And all bare him witness, and wondered at the gracious words which proceeded out of his mouth. And they said, Is not this Joseph’s son? And he said unto them, Ye will surely say unto me this proverb, Physician, heal thyself: whatsoever we have heard done in Capernaum, do also here in thy country. And he said, Verily I say unto you, No prophet is accepted in his own country But I tell you of a truth, many widows were in Israel in the days of Elias, when the heaven was shut up three years and six months, when great famine was throughout all the land; But unto none of them was Elias sent, save unto Sarepta, a city of Sidon, unto a woman that was a widow. And many lepers were in Israel in the time of Eliseus the prophet; and none of them was cleansed, saving Naaman the Syrian. Luke 4:22-27

Who does Jesus think he is? Isn’t this Mary and Joseph’s Son? Isn’t he the carpenter’s boy from Nazareth? Yes the carpenter’s Son is also the Son of God! As Jesus said “No prophet is accepted in his hometown” Because of their lack of faith, they seen a lack of healing and miracles.

And all they in the synagogue, when they heard these things, were filled with wrath, And rose up, and thrust him out of the city, and led him unto the brow of the hill whereon their city was built, that they might cast him down headlong. But he passing through the midst of them went his way, Luke 4:28-30

The religious leaders were furious with Jesus, and even tried to kill him after the service by throwing him over a hill, talk about a bad worship service! However they forgot Jesus is the Son of God and walked through them! How sad , Jesus presented them with all the evidence that He is the Messiah, yet they not only rejected him but tried to kill him!

Since Jesus suffered , we should expect to suffer also! Don’t expect to be a “Hometown Hero” for preaching the gospel, many will resist, many will try to discredit you, but remember its all about glorifying our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ Amen!
