Luke 8- Jesus Calms The Storm

Now it came to pass on a certain day, that he went into a ship with his disciples: and he said unto them, Let us go over unto the other side of the lake. And they launched forth. But as they sailed he fell asleep: and there came down a storm of wind on the lake; and they were filled with water, and were in jeopardy. And they came to him, and awoke him, saying, Master, master, we perish. Then he arose, and rebuked the wind and the raging of the water: and they ceased, and there was a calm. Luke 8:22-24

The world we are living in today is a constant storm, I’m pretty convinced we are living in the last days. I know many Christians have believed that throughout the centuries, however I can only go by my experiences and what the scriptures tell me. Regardless , the question is, what do we do during these difficult times? How do we get through these storms of life? There is only One calm in the storm and that is Jesus Christ, the Word made flesh!

The disciples were in a literal storm, stuck in a boat in a giant storm. They all believed they were going to die, so what was Jesus doing? Christ was taking a nap! How can he do that! Jesus wasn’t afraid of the storm, because He is in complete control of the storm. The winds and the water obey him, just like every knee will bow to Christ! He is the Lord of Lords!

And he said unto them, Where is your faith? And they being afraid wondered, saying one to another, What manner of man is this! for he commandeth even the winds and water, and they obey him.  Luke 8:25

Where is your faith? Jesus asked the disciples, these guys were in his inner circle, witnessed miracles and listened to his teachings, yet they lost their faith. Just like when Peter said to Jesus “I will never deny you” and when his life was on the line he denied Christ three times. Where is your faith during these difficult times? It’s easy to have faith when life is good and easy, faith is made for the storms of life to endure!

We’re in the boat right now! Many are afraid of perishing, many are afraid of losing all they have, but Jesus is asking “Where is your faith”? Did we forget Jesus rose from the dead defeating sin and death forever! Did we forget God created the Heavens and the Earth, nothing is out of his control! Focus on the calm in the storm, Jesus Christ, and not the storm itself Amen!

Acts 27- Calm in the Storm

But after long abstinence Paul stood forth in the midst of them, and said, Sirs, ye should have hearkened unto me, and not have loosed from Crete, and to have gained this harm and loss. And now I exhort you to be of good cheer: for there shall be no loss of any man’s life among you, but of the ship. For there stood by me this night the angel of God, whose I am, and whom I serve, For there stood by me this night the angel of God, whose I am, and whom I serve, Wherefore, sirs, be of good cheer: for I believe God, that it shall be even as it was told me. Acts 27:21-25

Here in Chapter 27 we see Paul being taken to Rome on a ship to see Caesar. Now during the trip, Paul has a prophetic moment and warns them this trip would be dangerous and potentially life threatening. However the pilot and the owner of the ship decided to continue on due to the winter season that was coming. During the trip, as expected , they got caught in a violent storm for days. The passengers all began throwing the cargo overboard to try and prevent from sinking the boat

The passengers haven’t eaten for days and were all worn down by battling the storm for days. However Paul gave them good news. An angel gave Paul a message that nobody would perish during this storm. God reminded Paul he must still stand before Caesar, you see God’s will must be done, God is always in control!

Howbeit we must be cast upon a certain island. But when the fourteenth night was come, as we were driven up and down in Adria, about midnight the shipmen deemed that they drew near to some country; And sounded, and found it twenty fathoms: and when they had gone a little further, they sounded again, and found it fifteen fathoms. Then fearing lest we should have fallen upon rocks, they cast four anchors out of the stern, and wished for the day. Acts 27:26-29

I think its interesting in verse 29 , many translations say “they prayed for daylight” rather than wish. Could some of these men have become converted during this storm? Often many of us find God during the worst times in our life, not the easiest time in our life.

And when he had thus spoken, he took bread, and gave thanks to God in presence of them all: and when he had broken it, he began to eat. Then were they all of good cheer, and they also took some meat. And we were in all in the ship two hundred threescore and sixteen souls And when they had eaten enough, they lightened the ship, and cast out the wheat into the sea. Acts 27:35-38

The next interesting thing we see here, is before they ate, Paul blessed the bread and broke it, just like Communion. Were these men now converted and partaking in the Lords Supper? I could be looking to far into this, but its very intriguing for me

Even when your caught in the storm, God is with you! Often times we need to go through the storm to find the Calm in the storm, Jesus Christ! God promised to Paul, that he would be delivered, trust in The Lord and lean not on our own understanding! Jesus is the Calm in the storm, Amen!

Mark 4- Jesus Calms The Storm

And the same day, when the even was come, he saith unto them, Let us pass over unto the other side. And when they had sent away the multitude, they took him even as he was in the ship. And there were also with him other little ships. And there arose a great storm of wind, and the waves beat into the ship, so that it was now full. Mark 4:35-37

One of the great demonstrations of Jesus deity is when he calmed the storm. There are many people, even today, who still believe that Jesus was only a man, or that he was only a prophet. Yet Jesus fully demonstrated that he has all power and authority over the supernatural and the natural world.

After teaching to massive crowds, Jesus and his disciples decided to get on a boat to cross the sea of Galilee, what’s important to note is Jesus was crossing the sea to preach to Gentiles. Why is this significant? Because the New Covenant is all about making us Children of God, Jew and Gentile, One Covenant under God

As they were crossing the sea of Galilee , a major storm broke out, causing some of his disciples to question their faith. Does that sound familiar? Often when life gets tough, that is when our faith is truly tested!

And he was in the hinder part of the ship, asleep on a pillow: and they awake him, and say unto him, Master, carest thou not that we perish? And he arose, and rebuked the wind, and said unto the sea, Peace, be still. And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm. And he said unto them, Why are ye so fearful? how is it that ye have no faith? Mark 4:38-40

After a long day of teaching, Jesus decided to take a nap, well his disciples were furious with him! How can you take a nap while we almost perish! Does this sound familiar in our own lives? When a storm of life arises, what do we do? We get angry at God, we blam him for all our troubles.

Jesus got up and rebuked the storm and it ceased immediately. Jesus demonstrated his power and authority as Lord of Lords. This is a demonstration of the New Covenant. A covenant with Christ with power and authority!

Why are you so fearful? Jesus asked his disciples, maybe Jesus is asking you this today also, why are you so fearful? Where is your faith? These words pierce the hearts of all believers. Jesus is questioning our faith!

And they feared exceedingly, and said one to another, What manner of man is this, that even the wind and the sea obey him?  Mark 4:41

Who is this man, that even sea obeys him? Jesus Christ demonstrated his power and authority over the natural and supernatural, the King of Kings and Lord of Lords. Every knee will bow and tongue will confess that Christ is Lord over all things Amen!
