Revelation Chapter 1- The Son of Man Revealed

The Revelation of Jesus Christ, which God gave Him to show His servants—things which must shortly take place. And He sent and signified it by His angel to His servant John, who bore witness to the word of God, and to the testimony of Jesus Christ, to all things that he saw. v1-2

Notice that this is the “Revelation of Jesus Christ”, this is not the Revelation from John or anyone else. The words in this prophetic book are from our Lord and Savior directly! The author is clearly identified at the Apostle John, the same author of the gospel of John, and the Epistles of John.

Blessed is he who reads and those who hear the words of this prophecy, and keep those things which are written in it; for the time is near. v3

Interesting how God says “Its a blessing to study the book of Revelation, yet many won’t or don’t because they claim they can’t understand it!

Also notice “the time is near”, the Church has always believed in the imminent return of Christ

John, to the seven churches which are in Asia: Grace to you and peace from Him who is and who was and who is to come, and from the seven Spirits who are before His throne, v4

Here we see Jesus is giving a message (letters) to 7 Churches in the province of Asia, why seven? 7 is the number of completion in the Bible, for example creation was completed on the seventh day. You will see the number seven used throughout the book of Revelation. These messages are for the entire Church, past, present, and future

We notice the “Seven Spirits” also, this is reference to The Holy Spirit. We remember Paul describing the “Seven gifts of The Holy Spirit ” (Isaiah 11:2-3) , remember 7 is symbolic for completion. So at this moment we have the Father, Son , and Holy Spirit at the throne.

The Spirit of the LORD shall rest upon Him, The Spirit of wisdom and understanding, The Spirit of counsel and might, The Spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the LORD. His delight is in the fear of the LORD, And He shall not judge by the sight of His eyes, Nor decide by the hearing of His ears; Isaiah 11:2-3

and from Jesus Christ, the faithful witness, the firstborn from the dead, and the ruler over the kings of the earth. To Him who loved us and washed us from our sins in His own blood, v5

Here we see a couple key passages, first it confirms Jesus is the firstborn from the dead, meaning Jesus physically died during his crucifixion and was resurrected back to life. This is important because there are some groups who don’t believe in a physical resurrection.

And He is the head of the body, the church; He is the beginning and firstborn from among the dead, so that in all things He may have preeminence. Colossians 1:18

Second it says “Jesus loves us” in present tense. This is the only place in the Bible where its stated in present tense. What a wonderful message!

and has made us kings and priests to His God and Father, to Him be glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen. v6

Every translation has the same thing, we were all made to be priests to serve God. Not just your local pastor but every Christian. What the means is what Jesus commanded at the great commission ” Go and make disciples of all the nations” (Matthew 28:19) Share the gospel to everyone whenever you have a chance

Behold, He is coming with clouds, and every eye will see Him, even they who pierced Him. And all the tribes of the earth will mourn because of Him. Even so, Amen. v7

This is a clear reference to Daniel 7 , which Jesus also revealed to the religious leaders in Matthew 24. Jesus is clearly revealing He is the Son of Man, God in the flesh, who will return to bring judgment upon the world. This is a reference to his 2nd Advent, the physical return of the Church and not the Rapture event of 1 Thessalonians 4

In my vision in the night I continued to watch, and I saw One like the Son of Man coming with the clouds of heaven. He approached the Ancient of Days and was led into His presence. Daniel 7:13

At that time the sign of the Son of Man will appear in heaven, and all the tribes of the earth will mourn. They will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven with power and great glory. Matthew 24:13

“I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End,” says the Lord, “who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty.” v8

Jesus is revealing his deity here, Alpha and Omega are the first and last words of the Greek alphabet, so Jesus is saying he is the beginning and the end (Isaiah 41:4) Meaning Jesus has always existed, he was not created as some false teachers preach

Who has performed this and carried it out, calling forth the generations from the beginning? I, the LORD—the first and the last—I am He.” Isaiah 41:4

I, John, both your brother and companion in the tribulation and kingdom and patience of Jesus Christ, was on the island that is called Patmos for the word of God and for the testimony of Jesus Christ. v9

Here again, the Apostle John is identified as the author of this book. Also it reveals the location , on the island of Patmos, where John was banished by the Roman government for persecution.

I was in the Spirit on the Lord’s Day, and I heard behind me a loud voice, as of a trumpet, v10

This is an important scripture here as John was writing this on “The Lords Day”, which is Sunday the day Jesus was resurrected. This confirms that “The Lords Day” was established and recognized by the first century church.

On the first day of the week we came together to break bread. Since Paul was ready to leave the next day, he talked to them and kept on speaking until midnight. Acts 20:7

Those who oppose this view confuse “The Lords Day” with “Day of The Lord” which are totally different. “Day of The Lord” would be referencing Revelation 6:17 when Jesus Christ returns for judgement!

For you are fully aware that the Day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night. 1 Thessalonians 5:2

saying, “I am the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last,” and, “What you see, write in a book and send it to the seven churches which are in Asia: to Ephesus, to Smyrna, to Pergamos, to Thyatira, to Sardis, to Philadelphia, and to Laodicea.” v11

Once again Jesus revealing His Deity, quoting Isaiah which is a reference to God

Thus says the LORD, the King and Redeemer of Israel, the LORD of Hosts: “I am the first and I am the last, and there is no God but Me. Isaiah 44:6

Remember earlier the number 7 is symbolic for completeness, so even though there are more than seven churches in the Asia Minor, Jesus will address only 7 to symbolize the complete “Body of Christ” hence these letters are relevant to all Christians just as all the other Epistles are.

Then I turned to see the voice that spoke with me. And having turned I saw seven golden lampstands, and in the midst of the seven lampstands One like the Son of Man, clothed with a garment down to the feet and girded about the chest with a golden band. v12-13

John is now about to come face to face with the King of Kings and Lord of Lords. First he sees 7 golden lampstands, these can be described better as “Jewish Menorahs” As revealed later in the Chapter, the lampstands are symbolic for The Churches.

John begins describing Jesus appearance, Son of Man which was a common phrase for Christ (Matthew 24:30) which Jesus himself described himself fulfilling the prophecy of Daniel 7:13

The robe and golden sash are symbolic for Jesus authority and royalty as the King of Kings and Lord of Lords and also Jesus is our High Priest, the fulfilment of the Levitical Priest line

Seeing then that we have a great High Priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession. Hebrews 4:14

His head and hair were white like wool, as white as snow, and His eyes like a flame of fire; His feet were like fine brass, as if refined in a furnace, and His voice as the sound of many waters; v14-15

This is the glorified Christ, this is not The Lamb who came during the First Advent, this is now the Lion of Judah, who rules and reigns. The whiteness is symbolic for his holiness and purity, while his eyes are a blazing fire, meaning he has come to bring judgement upon the unrepentant sinners.

Bronze is symbolic for Gods judgement. His voice was so authoritative and intimidating sounds like rushing waters.

Again we see the comparison to the Son of Man in Daniel 7, Jesus Christ is the One the prophet Daniel has seen and foretold about

As I continued to watch, thrones were set in place, and the Ancient of Days took His seat. His clothing was white as snow, and the hair of His head was like pure wool. His throne was flaming with fire, and its wheels were all ablaze. Daniel 7:9

He had in His right hand seven stars, out of His mouth went a sharp two-edged sword, and His countenance was like the sun shining in its strength. v16

Here we see 7 stars in the right hand of Jesus, remember right hand is very symbolic in Jewish culture meaning “special place of honor or authority” as Jesus sat at the right hand of God (Mark 16:19)

The stars symbolic of the messengers/angels of the Churches, notice all authority is in Christ

Jesus is the living Word and Truth, everything he speaks is like a double edge sword as described in Hebrews 4:12, his truth cuts to the bone of sinners and scoffers, that’s why the Bible is so offensive to the ungodly

For the word of God is living and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it pierces even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow. It judges the thoughts and intentions of the heart. Hebrews 4:12

Jesus is The Light of The World (John 8:12) is holiness, truth , and righteousness radiate as the Glory of God

And when I saw Him, I fell at His feet as dead. But He laid His right hand on me, saying to me, “Do not be afraid; I am the First and the Last. v17

What will you do when you meet Jesus face to face? You will fall on your face! The holiness of The Lord is overwhelming!

Again Jesus reveals his deity , Jesus is omnipotent meaning he has no beginning or end ( Isaiah 41:4) Notice also when John fell to Jesus feet to worship him, Jesus did not rebuke him but acknowledged him

Thus says the LORD, the King and Redeemer of Israel, the LORD of Hosts: “I am the first and I am the last, and there is no God but Me. Isaiah 44:6

am He who lives, and was dead, and behold, I am alive forevermore. Amen. And I have the keys of Hades and of Death. v18

I AM He, This is a statement and title that Identifies Jesus as the Great I AM, God in the flesh. Christ has identified himself as the I AM 7 times in the gospel of John

And God said to Moses, “I AM WHO I AM.” And He said, “Thus you shall say to the children of Israel, ‘I AM has sent me to you.’ ” Exodus 3:14

Jesus holds the keys to death and Hades (grave) Jesus holds the only hope for our souls, only through him can we obtain eternal life. Notice death is the state and Hades is the location

Hades typically means grave or realm of the dead. Its sometimes confused with Hell but has a totally different meaning, Hell is referenced as the Lake of Fire later in Revelation

Write the things which you have seen, and the things which are, and the things which will take place after this. v19

This is important to understand that some things in Revelation already happened, some things were happening right then, and many things are prophetic (will be happening in the future)

The Preterist view of Revelation is highly unlikely, as many events need to still take place, including the physical return of Christ, the Millennial Reign, the binding and elimination of Satan, the battle of Armageddon, the restoration of Israel, the final judgment, and the New Heavens and Earth

The mystery of the seven stars which you saw in My right hand, and the seven golden lampstands: The seven stars are the angels of the seven churches, and the seven lampstands which you saw are the seven churches v20

Jesus reveals the symbolism of the 7 stars and 7 lampstands

7 Stars = Angels/Messengers of the Churches

7 Lampstands = Churches

7 Churches = Body of Christ

7 Spirit = Holy Spirit

Released from The Law?

For example, by law a married woman is bound to her husband as long as he is alive, but if her husband dies, she is released from the law that binds her to him. Romans 7:2

Are we still under the law? This is a popular question that has many Christians divided. First question is what is the law? The Law is the Torah, the first five books (Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy) of the Bible that were handed down by God to Moses. These books contain the laws of God and defines what sin is. Without these books we could never know what sin even is, among other things.

Paul gives us an example, if a woman’s husband dies, she could then remarry because she is no longer under the law of marriage because of his death. The same is with Christians, if you truly accepted Jesus as your savior, then your old self has died (Romans 6:6) and you can’t be under the law. Anyone who has not accepted Christ is still bound under the law, which the wages of sin is death.

Now knowing this, if you live by the Spirit let us walk by the Spirit (Galatians 5:25) Meaning if you’re truly a servant of Christ, then you must live a holy life. You can’t walk with God and hold hands with the devil. God knows your heart and mind, and if you truly accept Jesus as your Savior, then you are circumcised at the heart (Romans 2:29)

Jesus didn’t come to abolish the law or the prophets but fulfill them (Matthew 5:17) The Law of God or Torah is still Gods standard, as he does not change (Malachi 3:6) However it is we that must change becoming transformed through Christ. Jesus tasted death so we didn’t have to (Hebrews 2:9) Live for Christ and Live forever in Jesus Name Amen

Happy Birthday Tanner!

Children are a heritage from the LORD, offspring a reward from him. Psalm 127:3

Today we celebrate Tanners 7th birthday, it’s been amazing to watch him grow and develop into who he is today. If I think back to who I was 7 years ago, he has changed me for the good also. Children are a gift from God, and through them we can learn a lot about life. Jesus taught us until we become like a child we will never see the Kingdom of Heaven (Matthew 18:3)

Tanner sees the world through different eyes, he is full of love and innocence. This is exactly what God wants us to be also. The other day Tanner wrote a message on a sticky note and handed it to me. It simply says “ I Love You” , I now keep that message in my wallet, such a simple message but powerful knowing that the message is pure.

At the young age of 7, Tanner has touched many lives already through his love and compassion. When a classmate tripped and fell at gym class, he stopped and gave her a hug. When a bus driver was having a bad day, he drew them a picture to cheer them up. And these are just moments I know about, God only knows how much love Tanner has spread already

It’s a privilege and honor to be Tanners Father, I thank God every day for our family that he has given us. Even though life isn’t perfect, I wouldn’t change a thing. I pray that God continues to allow his light to shine through Tanner in Jesus Name Amen

Treasured Possesion

For you are a people holy to the LORD your God. The LORD your God has chosen you out of all the peoples on the face of the earth to be his people, his treasured possession. Deuteronomy 7:6

When we read this scripture how God spoke to the Jewish people and set them apart to be his treasured possession, it’s exciting to know now that by the blood of Christ, we are now in this covenant also.

Through Christ Jesus you are all Children of God through faith (Galatians 3:26) The same love and promises that were given to the Jewish people are now also given to us the Gentiles, through Jesus.

The  Spirit you received  brought about your adoption to sonship, and by his we cry “Abba Father” (Romans 8:15)  That’s why nobody gets to the Father except thought The Son, but by the Son we can be a Child of The Most High God.

For God so loved the world that he  gave his only Begotten Son, for whoever believes in him may not perish but have eternal life ( John 3:16) Note God said anyone who accepts Jesus as there Lord and Savior, not just the Jews but the Gentiles also.

So rejoice for we have been set free by the Son, we have been set apart by our Heavenly Father, his treasured possession in Jesus Name Amen

Prophet Without Honor

Coming to his hometown, he began teaching the people in their synagogue, and they were amazed. “Where did this man get this wisdom and these miraculous powers?” they asked. “Isn’t this the carpenter’s son? Isn’t his mother’s name Mary, and aren’t his brothers James, Joseph, Simon and Judas? Matthew 13:54-55

When Jesus returned to his hometown of Nazareth during his ministry, the reaction was not what you would expect. Instead of people being joyful that the Messiah was from there hometown they began to question his legitimacy. Because they knew Jesus there entire lives they believed there is no way Jesus could be the Messiah, he just the carpenters Son

How you ever experienced this in your own life? Nobody how much you accomplished or how much you changed your life for the better your always going to have haters. There going to say “I knew this person growing up, they could never change” or “ I know where you come from , I know your family, you could never amount to anything”

And they took offense at him. But Jesus said to them, “A prophet is not without honor except in his own town and in his own home.” Matthew 13:57

Imagine how Jesus felt, these people he grew up around all his life, including his family mostly rejected him. The people he thought he could count on the most were the ones who doubted him the most.

Are there people in your life doubting you today? Or maybe your doubting someone in your life? Remember God works in mysterious ways, his ways our higher than our ways. God took a poor carpenter Son and saved the world with him. Don’t let peoples doubt stop your from your diving destiny.

And he did not do many miracles there because of their lack of faith. Matthew 13:58

Notice there lack of faith prevented Jesus from performing miracles. Imagine if they just had the faith the size of a mustard seed, how many miracles Jesus could have performed for them. But there doubt prevents the power of God from activating.

This is the same with our life, do you ever say “I don’t see any miracles” question is how much faith do you have? Is your lack of faith preventing Jesus from working in your life today? Remember with man it’s impossible but with God all things are possible in Jesus Name Amen

Happy Birthday Tanner

“I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”   John 16:33

As I reflect on another year of Tanners life, one word comes to mind “Overcomer”. This year Tanner started Kindergarten, we have a lot of questions and doubts going into this year how Tanner would do transitioning into regular school. However Tanner has not only adapted he is thriving!

Of course there were days that were tougher than others, but Tanner is a overcomer. When he sets his mind on something, he will work harder than everyone to get better. Even though he’s only going to be 6, hes been a huge inspiration to me.

For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. Jeremiah 29:11

The original plan was for Tanner to only spend 60% of the time with his regular class, and the other 40% with his support class. However Tanner had adapted so well since Day 1 that he has spent 100% of the time with his regular Kindergarten class. During our last meeting with the teachers they decided moving forward Tanner won’t need the support class at all as part of his plan.

Tanners teacher also revealed that during a grade wide testing, Tanner scored the highest of all the kids in  the entire Kindergarten for his reading level. Tanner actually reads text books to his classmates because they can’t.  I know I’m bragging a lot but you have to remember Tanner was labeled Autistic by the world, therefore the world assumed he would fail. Tanner not only overcame all those obstacles but he’s thriving above and beyond.

“You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Matthew 5:14

Once Tanners teachers and classmates get to know him, they instantly want to be his friend. Tanner is a light to this world, his big heart and charming personality make him addictive to be around. Anyone who takes the time to get to know Tanner, can see he is a blessing to this world

Children are a heritage from the LORD, offspring a reward from him. Psalm 127:3

I’m so proud of Tanner and honored that he is my son. I love him with all my heart and soul and want him to know every step he takes on this journey, we are right there with him. Anyone who ever met Tanner will tell you he is a light to this world. He radiates love and kindness. A true pure soul. I pray that God continues to bless him and guard him with his angels in Jesus Name Amen

Love Your Enemies

“You have heard that it was said, ‘Eye for eye, and tooth for tooth.’ But I tell you, do not resist an evil person. If anyone slaps you on the right cheek, turn to them the other cheek also. Matthew 5:38-39

One of the toughest lessons we learn from Jesus is to love our enemies. It’s difficult when people have wronged us it’s our natural instinct to seek revenge on them. But as Jesus is telling us we need to hold ourselves to a higher standard, take the higher ground. Instead of retaliating just shake it off and hold your peace.

Usually when we engage in the conflict its escalates it even further. As Christians we need to learn to be the peacemakers, to try to defuse a potential explosive situation not add fuel to the fire.

And if anyone wants to sue you and take your shirt, hand over your coat as well. If anyone forces you to go one mile, go with them two miles. Give to the one who asks you, and do not turn away from the one who wants to borrow from you. Matthew 5:40-42

Most of us, we work hard for the things we have and God rewards us for working hard with honesty and integrity. However we just need to make sure our possessions don’t end up possessing us. If you see someone in need, if its possible help them out. Doesn’t always mean giving them money either, maybe they just need a friend or a ride to work. The little things can sometimes be the biggest blessings to someone

If you love those who love you, what reward will you get? Are not even the tax collectors doing that? And if you greet only your own people, what are you doing more than others? Do not even pagans do that? Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect. Matthew 5:46-48

It’s easy to love our family and friends but to love your enemies is a daunting task. Jesus showed us a great example of this when he was crucified on the cross, instead of cursing his enemies he prayed for them and said “Father Forgive them for they know not what they do”

We need to strive to be like Christ, just as Jesus said strive to be perfect just as God is. We know its impossible to be perfect but we can strive for perfection, set the bar high, love your enemies in Jesus Name Amen

Thank you Veterans!

Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends. John 15:13

Today is Veterans Day, a day when we need to honor our real true heroes of this nation, past and present. Today’s society defines hero as a reality star or pop star. But if you want to see a true definition of a hero look no further than the men and woman who sacrificed it all for you!

I’m proud to say my Father is a hero, a Vietnam Veteran who spent 3 years in Hell for all of us. Without him I wouldn’t be able to even write this devotional, think about it. You have freedoms in the country including religion and speech because of heroes like my Dad, don’t let anyone take those freedoms away. They were not gained in vain.

For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. John 3:16

Jesus sacrificed his life so we can have eternal life, this is called “Agape” which is the highest form of love that is not selfless but sacrificial and spiritual. Jesus showed us what the ultimate act of love is, it’s an act not just a feeling.

There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens: a time to be born and a time to die, a time to plant and a time to uproot, a time to kill and a time to heal, a time to tear down and a time to build, a time to weep and a time to laugh, a time to mourn and a time to dance, a time to scatter stones and a time to gather them, a time to embrace and a time to refrain from embracing, a time to search and a time to give up, a time to keep and a time to throw away, a time to tear and a time to mend, a time to be silent and a time to speak, a time to love and a time to hate, a time for war and a time for peace. Ecclesiastes 3:1-8

Theres a time for everything, Veterans have been through the worst of times, let’s support them and help them see a time of healing and peace. We know that the only Peace for our soul is thru Jesus Christ, let them see that Peace through you.

Honor and Thank all Veterans today, past and present. Remember the sacrifices they suffered and the sorrows they had to bear for all of us. May God give them faith , hope , and love in Jesus Name Amen

Blessings Stored In Heaven

The faith and love that spring from the hope stored up for you in heaven and about which you have already heard in the true message of the gospel that has come to you. In the same way, the gospel is bearing fruit and growing throughout the whole world–just as it has been doing among you since the day you heard it and truly understood God’s grace. Colossians 1:5-6

When we truly understand God’s grace that has been delivered to us by our Lord Jesus Christ, then we have expectations of blessings from Heaven. We know we can overcome the world because Jesus has already overcame the world.

Notice the scriptures says “hope stored up for you in heaven” As I taught in an earlier devotional, the original Greek word for Hope is Elpida which mean expectation. So we can expect blessings from Heaven when we store them up thru prayers and thanksgiving to God.

For this reason, since the day we heard about you, we have not stopped praying for you. We continually ask God to fill you with the knowledge of his will through all the wisdom and understanding that the Spirit gives, so that you may live a life worthy of the Lord and please him in every way: bearing fruit in every good work, growing in the knowledge of God, Colossians 1:9-10

We can’t underestimate the power of prayer, its your greatest weapon. When we pray from the heart, our prayers release and aroma of sacrifice to God (2 Corinthians 2:15)

Just like in the Old Testament when they used to burn incense for a pleasing aroma for God, your prayers to God release a pleasing aroma to God.

being strengthened with all power according to his glorious might so that you may have great endurance and patience, and giving joyful thanks to the Father, who has qualified you to share in the inheritance of his holy people in the kingdom of light. Colossians 1:11-12

We can do all things through Christ who gives us strength, we all have heard this, but we need to believe it , think it , and live it. The power of The Holy Spirit has been giving to us all from God, welcome The Holy Spirit into your life today.

For he has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the Son he loves, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins. Colossians 1:13-14

The atonement sacrifice of Jesus has rescued us from the condemnation of death. Satan has a dominion of darkness right here on Earth and its looking to devour you like a Lion. But thru Christ we are victorious, give praise and thanksgiving daily to our Heavenly Father and store up the blessings in Jesus Name Amen

Parable of The Fig Tree

Then he told this parable: “A man had a fig tree growing in his vineyard, and he went to look for fruit on it but did not find any. Luke 13:6

The parable of the barren fig tree is very short and simple, yet it describes perfectly the relationship between God, Jesus, and Man.

We are Gods creation, which we represent the Fig Tree. God not only made us in him image but expects us not to follow the ways of Satan. Sin only produces bad fruit which equals death.

So he said to the man who took care of the vineyard, ‘For three years now I’ve been coming to look for fruit on this fig tree and haven’t found any. Cut it down! Why should it use up the soil?’ Luke 13:7

God makes its very clear those who continue to follow Satan and live a life a sin will be cast into the lake of fire. But the good news is we have an advocate, a redeemer.

Because of the blood of Jesus we are worthy to stand before God. What fruit are you bearing in your life? If God looked at your life would he consider you fruitful or barren?

“‘Sir,’ the man replied, ‘leave it alone for one more year, and I’ll dig around it and fertilize it. If it bears fruit next year, fine! If not, then cut it down.'”  Luke 13:8-9

Because of Jesus we can live, our past sins have been forgiven. But the journey doesn’t end there, when we accept Jesus into our hearts we become transformed and begin producing good fruit by faith , hope , and love of Christ.

Remember Fear of The Lord is the beginning of wisdom and understanding, if we don’t respect our Maker how can he respect us? It’s a Father/Child relationship. Be obedient and faithful to God and he will give you everlasting life in Jesus Name Amen
