But unto every one of us is given grace according to the measure of the gift of Christ. Wherefore he saith, When he ascended up on high, he led captivity captive, and gave gifts unto men. (Now that he ascended, what is it but that he also descended first into the lower parts of the earth? He that descended is the same also that ascended up far above all heavens, that he might fill all things.) Ephesians 4:7-10
The Ascension of Christ is the fulfillment of Jesus’s Earthly ministry. After The Lord rose from the dead, he remained on the Earth for 40 days until he went to sit at the right hand of God our Father. Now Jesus Christ reigns from Heaven, sitting on the throne as King of Kings and Lord of Lords.
As Jesus said “Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you. “ (John 16:7) When Jesus ascended into Heaven, then the Holy Spirit was sent, the Comforter, the Advocate, the Counselor. This was fulfilled at Pentecost , when the Holy Spirit was poured down upon the Church (Acts 2)
As the Apostle Paul said “gave gifts unto men”, the Holy Spirit not only lives inside of us as Born Again believers, but the Comforter gives us gifts (1 Corinthians 12, Romans 12) God has given us these gifts to serve the Church, and build the Kingdom of God. Gifts such as healing, prophecy, preaching, teaching, serving, ect. Every Born Again believer is given a gift by the Holy Spirit, you may not even know what your gift is yet, but combined as the Church, the gifts working together complete the body of Christ
And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers; For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ: Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ: Ephesians 4:11-13
There are many different roles given to different Christians throughout the Church. Not everyone is going to be a Pastor or a Teacher, however everyone’s role is important. As the Apostle Paul taught “If the foot shall say, Because I am not the hand, I am not of the body; is it therefore not of the body?” (1 Corinthians 12:15) The foot is not greater than the hand, everyone plays an important role in the Church. Without one of these parts, the body would not function properly, just as the Church wouldn’t function properly without one of its members
Jesus has Ascended to the right hand of the father, given all power and authority. The Holy Spirit has been sent to the Church to empower us, edify us, to perfect us in Jesus name Amen!
