And, behold, a woman of Canaan came out of the same coasts, and cried unto him, saying, Have mercy on me, O Lord, thou Son of David; my daughter is grievously vexed with a devil. But he answered her not a word. And his disciples came and besought him, saying, Send her away; for she crieth after us. But he answered and said, I am not sent but unto the lost sheep of the house of Israel. Then came she and worshipped him, saying, Lord, help me. Matthew 15:22-25
Jesus is demonstrating the New Covenant in multiple ways here, first we see this woman is a Gentile, a Cannanite in fact. The Cannanites were some of the most wicked people in human history, they worshiped pagan gods and sacrificed their children to demons , the Cannanites were also giants who were believed to be descendants of the Nephilim (Numbers 14, Genesis 6)
With all that being said, obviously this woman , being a descendant of the Cannanites , was the last person you would think Christ came to save. It was also no surprise that the woman’s daughter was possessed with demons, remember until Christ came, nobody ever casted out demons. We are seeing a total demonstration of the New Covenant with Christ here!
Jesus said “I was only sent to the lost sheep of Israel” this is what the Jews expected, that Christ was only The Lord of Israel, and Jesus made this statement to test the woman’s faith. What was her response? She came to Christ and worshiped him! She understood who Jesus is, and she came to him for salvation saying “Lord Help Me”!
But he answered and said, It is not meet to take the children’s bread, and to cast it to dogs. And she said, Truth, Lord: yet the dogs eat of the crumbs which fall from their masters’ table. Then Jesus answered and said unto her, O woman, great is thy faith: be it unto thee even as thou wilt. And her daughter was made whole from that very hour. Matthew 15:26-28
Again Jesus tested the Gentile woman, “Its not to take the Children’s (Jews) Bread and cast it to the Dogs (Gentiles)” now most people would have been insulted by Christ, but the woman came to Jesus with humility and repentance. We must also come to Christ in full humility and repentance, regardless of who you are! Her response was “Yet the dogs (Gentiles) eat the crumbs which fall from their Masters table” Now notice she addressed Jesus as Lord (Master)! She understood who Jesus is!
Jesus answered “O woman, great is your faith, let it be done as you desire” The Gentile woman was saved by faith in Christ, the same way all of us are saved, this is the New Covenant of Christ!
Do you desire to be at the Masters table, even if it means eating the crumbs? If Yes then great is your faith in Christ, Amen!
