And the LORD said unto Moses, Rise up early in the morning, and stand before Pharaoh, and say unto him, Thus saith the LORD God of the Hebrews, Let my people go, that they may serve me. For I will at this time send all my plagues upon thine heart, and upon thy servants, and upon thy people; that thou mayest know that there is none like me in all the earth. Exodus 9:13-14
By this time, I think Gods patience with Pharaoh is wearing thin. So here God answers the first question “Why send Plagues?” I’m sure most people would ask that, and God says “So the whole world will know there is no one like me”
Now notice God is expecting this Exodus story , not to just be a history lesson for Egypt, but a lesson for the whole world. This is God Almighty displaying his power and sovereignty , to make Him known!
For now I will stretch out my hand, that I may smite thee and thy people with pestilence; and thou shalt be cut off from the earth. And in very deed for this cause have I raised thee up, for to shew in thee my power; and that my name may be declared throughout all the earth. Exodus 9:15-16
Now the next question is answered “Why did God harden Pharaohs heart?” God is using Egypt and Pharaoh for demonstration to the whole world. The Exodus story is not just for Jewish people , this story is for the entire world! Are you going to submit to the One true God or are you going to perish in your disobedience?
As yet exaltest thou thyself against my people, that thou wilt not let them go? Behold, to morrow about this time I will cause it to rain a very grievous hail, such as hath not been in Egypt since the foundation thereof even until now. Exodus 9:17-18
Pharaoh continually exalts himself as god even though he has seen the evidence of the true living God. Again , we still see this today with people, all the evidence of God yet they hardened their hearts and exalt themselves
Next the 7th plague , God is going to rain down hail, unlike anything that has been seen since the beginning of the world. Again we see the parallel in Revelation, where God will reign down hail upon judgement of the world. Yes the Exodus story is still relevant to the entire world
And the hail smote throughout all the land of Egypt all that was in the field, both man and beast; and the hail smote every herb of the field, and brake every tree of the field. Only in the land of Goshen, where the children of Israel were, was there no hail. Exodus 9:25-26
God gave Egypt the warning, anything outside would get pummeled with hail. Some Egyptians feared Yahweh and brough everything inside, some ignored the warning and paid the consequence. But notice again, God spared the Israelites from this judgement, again is this a foreshadow of the Rapture?
And Pharaoh sent, and called for Moses and Aaron, and said unto them, I have sinned this time: the LORD is righteous, and I and my people are wicked. Intreat the LORD (for it is enough) that there be no more mighty thunderings and hail; and I will let you go, and ye shall stay no longer. Exodus 9:27-28
It almost seems like Pharaoh is finally coming to true repentance, he admits that he has sinned and the Egyptians are wicked. He begs Moses to be a mediator for them and have Yahweh show mercy upon them. Note that Jesus Christ is our Mediator today between us and the Father
And the heart of Pharaoh was hardened, neither would he let the children of Israel go; as the LORD had spoken by Moses. Exodus 9:35
More deceit by Pharaoh , as he truly didnt repent. As soon as God stopped the plague, Pharaoh hardened his heart again and held the Israelites slaves. Many people are like this today, fairweather Christians. They cry out to God in times of trouble, but as soon as things are good they drift from God and some totally abandon him
And there fell upon men a great hail out of heaven, every stone about the weight of a talent: and men blasphemed God because of the plague of the hail; for the plague thereof was exceeding great. Revelation 16:21
Again we see the parallel in Revelation, God reigning down hail on the wicked. God does not change, he is the same , today, yesterday, and forever. The God of the Exodus is the same God of Revelation. You can’t fool the Creator of the Universe , Repent or perish!
