Greatest Commandment

Then one of them, which was a lawyer, asked him a question, tempting him, and saying, Master, which is the great commandment in the law? Matthew 22:35-36

The religious leaders decided they wanted to challenge Jesus on The Law. Now the first question is what do they mean by The Law? To answer this question we must first understand the Old Testament, God gave Moses the Ten Commandments on Mt Sinai

Now if we study The Law in more depth, we will realize there are over 600 Laws in the Old Covenant. But the 10 Commandments are the foundation of Gods essence. These are not just rules to live by, this is a reflection of Gods nature and a mirror for our sinful nature

Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets. Matthew 22:37-40

Jesus made this for simple for us, he broke down the 10 commandments into 2. Love God and Love Your Neighbor! If you cant remember the 10 commandments remember these two principles, because everything is summed up in these commandments

If we look at the first four commandments:

  1. Don’t worship other gods
  2. Don’t make graven images or idols
  3. Don’t take Gods name in vein
  4. Keep the Sabbath

These 4 commandments are all about loving God, so if you truly Love God, you keep these commandments without issue

  1. Honor your father and mother
  2. Don’t Kill
  3. Don’t commit Adultery
  4. Don’t steal
  5. Don’t lie or gossip about your neighbor
  6. Don’t want or envy what your neighbor has

These 5 commandments obviously reflect Loving your Neighbor, so if you Love and Love your Neighbor , you are fulfilling The Law, as Jesus said the entire Law and Prophets hang on Love God and Love your Neighbor

For the law was given by Moses, but grace and truth came by Jesus Christ. John 1:17

Now I know what your thinking, I fail at the Law. Yes we have all fallen short and are sinners, this is why we need Jesus! The Law was handed down to Moses but Grace came through Christ! Jesus also gave us further revelation and explanation of The Law, just study The Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5)

  1. But A Sword

I’ve been reading the Bible. I started at Genesis and am now in 1st Samuel. The beauty of the law was to see God’s heart about things. He finds so many things detestable. He basically says that anything in His presence MUST be holy. It cannot be disgusting. Jesus explains to religious leaders who accused Him of healing on the Sabbath. One law says that boys must be circumcised on the 8th day after birth. So what happens if that 8th day falls on the Sabbath? We see a similar issue, when the Israelites in Joshua we’re commanded to completely destroy the inhabitants of Canaan and there’s a law that any oath an Israelite makes, he must keep. The Israelites were tricked by a town in Canaan into making a vow to not kill them. So, they were unable to completely enact the will of God, because they were in a catch 22 with the law.

Jesus is so cool. His perfect sacrifice frees us from that stuff. In the book of Judges, we see the results of the sin of that catch 22. Because of Jesus, we are in His Grace. The punishment for most laws of Moses were gruesome. Jesus took all those punishments for us for generations. Sin cannot be tolerated by God. Something always had to die for the sin of the Israelites: goats, bulls, something. Jesus paid it all. It’s so awesome. Thanks for the post.
