It Is Finished

Therefore when Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, “It is finished!” And He bowed His head and gave up His spirit. John 19:30

What did Jesus mean when he said “It Is Finished”? Some would say “all of our sins were washed away”, some might say “Death was defeated” And these things are true , however I believe there is also a deeper meaning that we might not be considering

The original Greek for “It Is Finished” is to end, to fulfill, to pay, to complete

So what is Jesus fulfilling? What is he paying? What is he completing?

And in the same way He took the cup after they had eaten, saying, “This cup which is poured out for you is the new covenant in My blood. Luke 22:20

Jesus said that his blood shed for us would be a “New Covenant”. This is the New Covenant that was fortold in the Old Testament (Jeremiah 31, Ezekiel 36)

A covenant is a contract. The old Covenant (Contract) has been fulfilled, completed. On the cross Jesus fulfilled the Old Covenant, IT IS FINISHED

Do not think that I came to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I did not come to abolish but to fulfill. Matthew 5:17

Jesus said he has Fulfilled (Finished) the Law and the Prophets (Old Covenant) The contract has been completed by the works of Jesus Christ. No longer are we bound by the Law because Christ has Finished or Fulfilled the contract

When He said, “A new covenant,” He has made the first obsolete. But whatever is becoming obsolete and growing old is ready to disappear. Hebrews 8:13

So when Jesus said IT IS FINISHED on the cross, he has freed us from the penalty of death from The Law. Is The Law abolished, NO, it has been fulfilled by Christ. If your not saved by the blood of Christ, you are still under The Law

However those who repent and put their trust in Jesus have been set Free, IT IS FINISHED
