Romans 11- The Remnant

I say then, Hath God cast away his people? God forbid. For I also am an Israelite, of the seed of Abraham, of the tribe of Benjamin. God hath not cast away his people which he foreknew. Wot ye not what the scripture saith of Elias? how he maketh intercession to God against Israel, saying, Lord, they have killed thy prophets, and digged down thine altars; and I am left alone, and they seek my life. But what saith the answer of God unto him? I have reserved to myself seven thousand men, who have not bowed the knee to the image of Baal. Romans 11:1-4

Now we start looking at maybe one of the most controversial or misunderstood chapters in the Bible, the Apostle Paul, under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, makes a clear case for Israel and God’s remnant. While many people today believe God is finished with Israel, the Holy Spirit tells us a different story. As the Apostle Paul begins with a rhetorical question “Has God cast away His people”?

Paul then answers his own question “God forbid” or “Certainly Not” , now this should be the end of the debate whether God is finished with Israel, however Paul will go through an entire chapter explaining God is not finished with Israel yet. I know this knowledge angers many Gentiles and Jews, however this was predicted as the Church and Israel are going to drive each other to jealousy over their relationship with God (Romans 11:11, 14)

The Apostle Paul who is a Jew himself, from the tribe a Benjamin, a well trained Pharisee, he knows the Mosaic Law , He knows how radical the New Covenant in Christ is, Jews and Gentiles can become Children of God through Christ, (Galatians 3:26) A concept that many still can’t grasp, however as the Apostle Paul states “God has not cast away His people which He foreknew” It’s clear God is not finished with Israel yet!

Now the Apostle Paul uses an example of the prophet Elijah to teach his point the prophet Elijah made intercession to God against Israel saying “Lord they have killed your prophets and torn down your altars and I am left alone” I can hear many Christians today saying the same things, claiming we are the only ones who are worthy of being saved, claiming we are the only ones who haven’t blasphemed God, beware of our self righteousness!

What was God’s answer to the prophet? “I have reserved myself for seven thousand men who have not bowed a knee to Baal” God still has a remnant in Israel, just as God still has a remnant in the Church. There are many “Churches” today that are as blasphemous as the one who rejects Christ, but God will always have a remnant! Is God finished with Israel, No, God has preserved a remnant that will become Born Again in Jesus Christ, just as the early Church did, Amen!

Romans 10- Rejection of the Gospel

But they have not all obeyed the gospel. For Esaias saith, Lord, who hath believed our report? So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God. But I say, Have they not heard? Yes verily, their sound went into all the earth, and their words unto the ends of the world. But I say, Did not Israel know? First Moses saith, I will provoke you to jealousy by them that are no people, and by a foolish nation I will anger you. But Esaias is very bold, and saith, I was found of them that sought me not; I was made manifest unto them that asked not after me. But to Israel he saith, All day long I have stretched forth my hands unto a disobedient and gainsaying people. Romans 10:16-21

The Apostle Paul, once again turns his focus back on Israel. As Paul states “But they (Israel) have not all obeyed the gospel” So obviously the gospel, the good news of Jesus Christ, has been preached throughout Israel, yet many have rejected Christ. In fact, as the Apostle Peter states ““Therefore let all the house of Israel know assuredly that God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord and Christ.” (Acts 2:36) Peter reveals to Israel, Jesus whom they killed was actually The Messiah and Our Lord in the flesh. Now thousands were convicted of their sin, repent and put their faith in Jesus, and were also filled with the Holy Spirit (Acts 2) However the majority of them, hardened their hearts and rejected the gospel

The Prophet Isaiah fortold alll of this would happen, just as He foretold by the Holy Spirit, the whole life of Jesus Christ. Its amazing to think the prophet Isaiah fortold about the Messiah, through the Virgin Birth (Isaiah 7) that the Son would be “Mighty God” (Isaiah 9:6) and the Messiah would die for our sins (Isaiah 53) despite all of this, many have rejected the gospel of Jesus Christ

So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing the Word of God (v17) Again as the Apostle Paul stated previously “How will they hear without a preacher” (v14) We don’t know how people will respond to the gospel message of Christ, however its our responsibility to share the gospel of Christ. Many in Israel have rejected the gospel, and even today many still reject salvation through Jesus, however there is always a remnant of God (Romans 11:4) God still has an elect group that will receive the gospel of Jesus Christ, however they need to hear the gospel, faith comes by hearing the Word of God!

Then the Apostle Paul quotes Moses regarding the relationship between Israel and the Church, “But I say, did Israel not know, First Moses says I will provoke you (Israel) to jealousy by those (Gentiles) who are not a nation” Salvation of the Gentiles is driving Israel to jealousy, as they have rejected Their Lord and God, Amen!

Romans 10- Preach The Gospel

How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher? And how shall they preach, except they be sent? as it is written, How beautiful are the feet of them that preach the gospel of peace, and bring glad tidings of good things! Romans 10:14-15

The Apostle Paul asks a great rhetorical question here, “How shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard?” We have an important mission as the Church, to fulfill the Great Commision, to preach the gospel to all the nations (Matthew 28:19) This is the most important calling you will ever have, eternal life is at stake, not to mention these are the marching orders from our Lord

Many people today make the wrong assumption everyone has heard the gospel of Jesus Christ. The reality is the majority of younger kids have never heard the gospel, they have never heard about Jesus Christ and what He has done for them. While the Holy Spirit prepares their hearts and minds to receive the gospel, its our job to plant the seed, its our job to share the gospel (the good news) of Jesus Christ.

Notice what the Apostle Paul says next “And how shall they preach, except they be sent?” A couple things to notice here, how can you share the gospel of Jesus Christ , unless you know the gospel, can you explain the gospel to an unbeliever? If someone challenged your faith, are you prepared to give an answer? (1 Peter 3:15) This is why we need to study our Bible, the Word of God, so we can know our Lord more, grow in our faith, and be prepared to share the gospel with the world

The next thing is “they be sent” we have a higher calling by God, we were chosen and Born Again through our Lord Jesus Christ (John 3:3) You have been called and sent to preach the gospel of Jesus Christ (Matthew 28:19) This is your divine higher calling by God, to neglect to preach the gospel is disobedience to your Lord. You might say, well I’m not able to preach the gospel, God has given you the Holy Spirit, God has given you his written Word, God has given you The Church, prepare and preach the good news of Jesus Christ!

“How beautiful are those who preach the gospel of peace” It pleases The Lord when His Church are sharing the good news, however this won’t be considered beautiful to the world. You will face opposition, possibly even persecution, imprisonment, or death. However we already have the Victory in Jesus Christ, He has already overcome the world (John 16:33) Let the world know Christ Is Risen! Amen!

Romans 10- Jesus Is Lord

That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. For the scripture saith, Whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed. For there is no difference between the Jew and the Greek: for the same Lord over all is rich unto all that call upon him. For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved. Romans 10:9-13

When you read these scriptures from a 21rst century American perspective, we think “Hey Christianity is easy” just say Jesus Is Lord and you get the golden ticket into Heaven. Unfortunately this is what most modern day Western Christianity has become anymore, a very shallow , consumer minded Churchianity. Most people today ask “What can Jesus do for me”? Instead of how can I serve the One True King!

So looking at this text from a correct cultural context lens, this letter was written to the Church of Rome in the 1rst Century, a place where Christians were often tortured by being fed to lions for everyone’s entertainment. The region where Caesar was Lord and ruled with a rod of iron, in fact the Roman coin had an inscription on it that stated “Ceaser is the Son of God”

To publicly profess Jesus Is Lord is a guarantee you are an enemy of Caesar, that would mean you will lose everything, including the possibility of your life. To profess your allegiance to Christ instead of Caesar , literally meant to deny yourself, carry your cross, and follow Jesus. Your ultimate fate would be in prison, or being fed to lions while a great crowd cheers on, or being tied to a stake and burned alive, which was called a “Roman Candle” So are you ready to profess Jesus Christ is Lord now?

Christianity was not for the faint of heart in the 1rst Century, to profess Jesus is Lord, meant truly in your heart you believed Jesus is the Son of God who rose from the dead. If you didn’t truly believe that, you will never make this public profession, because it would cost you everything! As the Apostle Paul states “the same Lord over all” Jesus Is Lord and King over all Creation

“Everyone who calls upon the name of The Lord shall be saved” Call upon the name of Jesus and you shall be saved, the Risen Lord is King of His eternal Kingdom, Amen!

Romans 10- Righteousness by Faith

For Moses describeth the righteousness which is of the law, That the man which doeth those things shall live by them. But the righteousness which is of faith speaketh on this wise, Say not in thine heart, Who shall ascend into heaven? (that is, to bring Christ down from above🙂 Or, Who shall descend into the deep? (that is, to bring up Christ again from the dead.) But what saith it? The word is nigh thee, even in thy mouth, and in thy heart: that is, the word of faith, which we preach; Romans 10:5-8

The Law and The Gospel, these are essential in our faith with Christ. Many Christians want to remove The Law from our existence, make no mention of it, however then why do you need to hear the gospel? Without The Law, why do you need Jesus? You can’t understand your wretchedness without The Law, you also can’t understand righteousness without The Law, as the Apostle Paul stated “The Law is our tutor to bring us to Christ “(Galatians 3:24)

God brought forth The Law through Moses “Moses describes the righteousness which is of The Law” However how do we obtain this righteousness? The Law is actually perfect and beautiful, but we can’t obtain it because we are depraved, therefore we hate The Law! “The man which does those things shall live by them” We try to live righteous by The Law but we fail miserably everyday, oh wretched sinner that I am (Romans 7:24)

“But the righteousness which is of faith speaks in this way” So righteousness is obtained by faith in Christ and not by The Law. We could never obtain righteousness of ourselves because we could never “Keep The Law” However as previously stated “Christ is the end of the Law for righteousness to everyone who believes” (v4)

We are saved by grace through faith in Christ (Ephesians 2:8-9) This is how we can obtain righteousness by faith in Christ and not by The Law, because we are unable to Keep The Law. Whoever tries to obtain righteousness without Christ, will condemn themselves. “The word is near you in your heart and your mouth” We don’t just profess to be Christians, we need a new heart and a new mind, the Holy Spirit must live inside of us (Ezekiel 36, Jeremiah 33, John 3) We must be Born Again, The Law must be written on our hearts and minds

So we don’t just talk the talk , we also walk the walk, faith without works is dead (James 2) By grace through faith in Christ, Jesus makes us Born Again, so we can become the righteousness of God, (2 Corinthians 5:21) Amen

Romans 10- End Of The Law

Brethren, my heart’s desire and prayer to God for Israel is, that they might be saved. For I bear them record that they have a zeal of God, but not according to knowledge. For they being ignorant of God’s righteousness, and going about to establish their own righteousness, have not submitted themselves unto the righteousness of God. For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to every one that believeth Romans 10:1-4

The Apostle Paul, under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, will continue about Israel, and how he desires them to become saved. It’s pretty clear here in the context that Paul is addressing Israel, and I make this point because many will claim the Church has replaced Israel, but if thats the case , the three chapters of Romans (9,10,11) contextual wouldn’t make any sense. Paul wouldn’t have a desire for the Church to be saved, because they are already saved in Christ. The Apostle, an Israelite, is making a plead for Israel to come to Christ for salvation

Paul goes even one step forward to try and mediate for Israel “For I bear them record that they have zeal of God” Paul is trying to make the case, the Jews have passion and love for God, and they do, however nobody can come to the Father except through Jesus Christ (John 14:6) And this is the problem with all religions and cult groups, they will never truly know God until they know the true Risen Lord. There is no salvation outside of Jesus Christ (Acts 4:12) regardless of how much zeal and religion you have, you need to be Born Again (John 3:3)

“Being ignorant of Gods righteousness, seeking to establish their own righteousness” They don’t understand the grace of God, they don’t understand we are saved by grace through faith , it is not of ourselves (works, religion), it is a gift of God, not by works so anyone can boast (Ephesians 2:8-9) All false religions don’t understand we are saved by grace through faith in Christ and not of our own works, so the false religions continue to try and earn their salvation. They try to work their way into Heaven, and they will never achieve this, because we are wretched sinners in need of a Savior (Romans 3:23)

Jesus said “I have not come to abolish The Law, but fulfill” (Matthew 5:17) Jesus fulfilled all righteousness (Matthew 3:15) Its only through Christ we can be saved. While Israel tries to earn their salvation by “keeping The Law” they are actually condemning themselves, because nobody can “keep the Law” (Galatians 3:11) The Law has been fulfilled in Christ, our sins can only be atoned for by Christ , It Is Finished at the Cross of Christ (John 19:30) Glory to The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world (John 1:29) Amen!

Romans 9- Christ The Cornerstone

What shall we say then? That the Gentiles, which followed not after righteousness, have attained to righteousness, even the righteousness which is of faith. But Israel, which followed after the law of righteousness, hath not attained to the law of righteousness. Wherefore? Because they sought it not by faith, but as it were by the works of the law. For they stumbled at that stumblingstone; As it is written, Behold, I lay in Sion a stumblingstone and rock of offence: and whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed. Romans 9:30-33

As the Apostle Paul, under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, continues to reveal to us the New Covenant in Christ, the Chief Cornerstone, Paul also explains to us why many failed to achieve righteousness, even if they were elect or not, righteousness is attained by faith and not the works of The Law.

Paul begins “The Gentiles, which followed not after righteousness, have attained righteousness, even the righteousness which is of faith” Israel was given The Law through Moses, yet they failed to obtain righteousness because they didn’t understand The Law. As Paul continues “because they sought it not by faith, but as if it were by the works of the law” Israel tried to earn their own salvation, they tried to obtain righteousness by themselves

However nobody is able to obtain righteousness by works, The Law was given to reveal our sin, not to make us sinless. The Law is a mirror, that should have brought them to their knees of repentance, however it made them boast in arrogance of sin. Ultimately The Law condemned them because they didn’t seek God by faith, but they sought God by works.

The Apostle Paul reveals another prophecy about Christ from the Old Testament, the prophet Isaiah fortold about Jesus all throughout His ministry, Paul quotes him here “Behold I lay in Zion (Israel) a stumbling stone, a rock of offence, and whoever (Jew or Gentile) believes on Him (Christ) will not be put to shame” (Isaiah 28:16) The prophet was telling Israel, salvation is found in faith in Christ and not of yourselves!

Jesus Christ is the Chief Cornerstone, (1 Peter 2:6-8) He is the only way to salvation (John 14:6) Its not by the works of The Law but its by faith in Christ, everyone who calls upon the name of The Lord shall be saved! (Joel 2:32, Romans 10:13) Amen!

Romans 9- The New Covenant

As he saith also in Osee, I will call them my people, which were not my people; and her beloved, which was not beloved And it shall come to pass, that in the place where it was said unto them, Ye are not my people; there shall they be called the children of the living God. Esaias also crieth concerning Israel, Though the number of the children of Israel be as the sand of the sea, a remnant shall be saved: For he will finish the work, and cut it short in righteousness: because a short work will the Lord make upon the earth. And as Esaias said before, Except the Lord of Sabaoth had left us a seed, we had been as Sodoma, and been made like unto Gomorrha. Romans 9:25-29

One of the blessings of the Apostle Paul is him being a well trained Pharisee filled with the Holy Spirit, He can tie together the Old and New Testaments. Paul is going to just quote the prophets of the Old Testament to reveal the New Covenant in Christ. This was not a new idea or religion by the Apostles, this was foretold by God since the foundation of the world, that Jews and Gentiles would become Children of God through The Lord Jesus Christ

The Prophet Hosea states “I will call them My People, who are not My People”  (Hosea 2:23) This is a clear prophecy of the New Covenant in Christ, this is a clear reference to us the Gentile Church. Without Christ we were outside of God, but In Christ we are Children of God (Galatians 3:26) This is what the prophet Hosea states “They will be called Children of the Living God” (Hosea 1:10) Not only are we saved, but we become Children of God through Christ!

Then the Apostle Paul quotes the prophet Isaiah “Though the number of the children of Israel be as the sand of the sea, the remnant will be saved” (Isaiah 10:22-23) This points out a topic we discussed previously about election and salvation. Even though there is an elect of Israel that is as numerous as the sand, only a small remnant will be saved. So again, election doesn’t automatically equal salvation. Even though Israel was elected for a special purpose to bring forth the Messiah Jesus, it doesn’t mean every Jewish person is a Child of God, you must be Born Again in Christ (John 3:3)

Paul quotes the prophet Isaiah by stating “Unless The Lord of Hosts/Almighty has left us a seed, we would have become like Sodom” (Isaiah 1:9) So who is the seed or remnant? Think about the heroes of the Bible (Abraham, Noah, Moses, ect) there has always been a faithful remnant of God, unless we would end like Sodom, a remembrance of total depravity and wickedness. What was the sentence for Sodom and Gomorrah? Total destruction, turn to The Lord Jesus Christ, our only hope, Amen!

Romans 9- Glory To God

What if God, willing to shew his wrath, and to make his power known, endured with much longsuffering the vessels of wrath fitted to destruction: And that he might make known the riches of his glory on the vessels of mercy, which he had afore prepared unto glory, Even us, whom he hath called, not of the Jews only, but also of the Gentiles? Romans 9:22-24

This is a very powerful text or revelation from the Apostle Paul, under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit. We as finite creatures, have these preconceived notions that we know God should be doing or how He should be doing it. And then we need to come to the realization that we are the creation and God is The Creator, the Boss of us all. And this really sums up the New Covenant in Christ.

As the Apostle Paul begins here “What if God, willing to show his wrath, and make His power known, endure with longsuffering (patience) the vessels of wrath fitted for destruction” In other words what if God is going to show you His sovereignty and power by saving the Gentiles who were worthy of being destroyed? And of course this was sickening to the Jews, we are “Gods chosen people” why would our God save the “Gentile Dogs”? Well because they are Gods children also and He can! God doesn’t need your understanding or approval to accomplish His will

And the ironic thing is the Church today acts the same way. Most “Christians” today will say “The Jews are done away with” , they are all apostates worthy of Hell, but that’s not what the Word of God says! Well this is my theological doctrine belief and ect, ect. God is not impressed by your theological understanding, God is going to demonstrate His power on giving mercy to whoever He wants to give mercy!

As Paul continues here “And that He (God) might make known the riches of His glory on the vessels of mercy, whom He prepared in advance for His glory” While this may be a shocking revelation to the Jews and Gentiles, this is not suprising to God, He already knew who His children are, He already knew that Jesus Christ would become flesh, die on the cross and defeat sin, death, hell, and Satan forever!

Even Us, whom He called, not of the Jews only, but also the Gentiles! The New Covenant that was prophesied by the prophets is fulfilled in Christ, to the Glory of God the Father, Jesus the Son, and the Holy Spirit, Amen!

Romans 9- The Potter

Thou wilt say then unto me, Why doth he yet find fault? For who hath resisted his will? Nay but, O man, who art thou that repliest against God? Shall the thing formed say to him that formed it, Why hast thou made me thus? Hath not the potter power over the clay, of the same lump to make one vessel unto honour, and another unto dishonour? Romans 9:19-21

So as were working through the book of Romans, specifically Chapters 9 through 11, many people have different interpretations or understanding of the text. Many will argue their theological position to remain in the religious tradition they are in. However the bottom line, it doesn’t matter what you think or if you can even comprehend Gods will and plan. God is soverign, rules and reigns over His creation, and regardless whether you can comprehend his glory or holiness, doesn’t matter. In fact, if we are being honest, nobody could possible fully comprehend God, as we are His finite creation.

The old preacher John Wesley once said “Bring me a worm that can comprehend man, and I’ll show you a man that can comprehend the Triune God” Now skeptics will say this is an excuse, this is a copout to say we can’t comprehend God. Is it really? Or are we just being honest with our limitations as His creation? Can you explain to me how God created the Heavens and Earth, stars, moon, planets, humans, animals, ect from nothing? Nobody can explain the awesome power of our God

The Apostle Paul gives us gives us great insight in this text “Does not the potter have power over the clay” (v21) God is the potter and we are the clay, that should be a little humbling, right? Can the clay comprehend the Potter? Probably not, but does that matter? The Potter is in control, the Potter is the Creator and ruler of His Creation. The Potter has the power and authority to do whatever He wishes, regardless of how you feel about it or if it falls into your theological tradition or thinking

As scripture says “The Fear of The Lord is the beginning of wisdom and understanding” (Proverbs 9:10) One of the big issues with the Church today, is we lost our Fear, our Reverence of God our Creator.  Instead of obeying Gods Word, we argue well I was taught this or this person said that, they are all just Clay! The Potter is greater than all Clay, yet in todays Church we have elevated the Clay over the Potter. Professing ourselves to be wise, we became fools (Romans 1:22)

How can God harden Pharoahs heart? Because God is the Potter and Pharoah is the Clay, as the Apostle Paul says “But who are you to reply against God” (v20) But we argue against God, because we have no fear of God, we have no reverence of God, we have elevated the Clay over the Potter, the Church needs to Repent and sumit to our Lord Jesus Christ, and be filled and led by the Holy Spirit, Amen!
