Matthew 13- Parable of The Sower

And he spake many things unto them in parables, saying, Behold, a sower went forth to sow; And when he sowed, some seeds fell by the way side, and the fowls came and devoured them up: Some fell upon stony places, where they had not much earth: and forthwith they sprung up, because they had no deepness of earth: And when the sun was up, they were scorched; and because they had no root, they withered away. And some fell among thorns; and the thorns sprung up, and choked them: But other fell into good ground, and brought forth fruit, some an hundredfold, some sixtyfold, some thirtyfold. Who hath ears to hear, let him hear. Matthew 13:3-9

When we talk about evangelism, it’s interesting how different people respond or react to the same gospel message. Jesus explains this in a parable, he compares people to different soils. Some have stony ground, some let the seed fall to the wayside, some receive the gospel but let the world choke out its hope, and then some have good soil and the gospel message takes root

Now Jesus is referring to the Word of God to a seed. This is why we are commanded to “Preach the gospel to everyone” (Matthew 28:19) because the gospel is a seed, and for those elect it will take root and bring people to repentance and salvation. While others whose hearts are hardened will reject the gospel and it won’t take any root in them at all. Those who receive the gospel will also produce fruit (Matthew 7) the evidence of the Holy Spirit. Let those who have spiritual discernment hear!

Hear ye therefore the parable of the sower. When any one heareth the word of the kingdom, and understandeth it not, then cometh the wicked one, and catcheth away that which was sown in his heart. This is he which received seed by the way side. But he that received the seed into stony places, the same is he that heareth the word, and anon with joy receiveth it; Yet hath he not root in himself, but dureth for a while: for when tribulation or persecution ariseth because of the word, by and by he is offended. He also that received seed among the thorns is he that heareth the word; and the care of this world, and the deceitfulness of riches, choke the word, and he becometh unfruitful. But he that received seed into the good ground is he that heareth the word, and understandeth it; which also beareth fruit, and bringeth forth, some an hundredfold, some sixty, some thirty. Matthew 13:18-23

Jesus actually explains this parable for us, Satan is continually trying to make the Word of God irrelevant. Why? Because Satan knows the Word of God is truth and will set you free. So we see in today’s world, they want to say the Bible is “outdated” or the Bible is “hateful” or “offensive” As Paul said “The message of the cross is foolishness to anyone who is perishing” (1 Corinthians 1:18)

There are those who will receive the Word of God, but then they go through a hardship or trial, and then they blame it on God. So they reject the gospel message because they are not living their best life now, our best life is to come in Gods Kingdom. This is the danger and blasphemy of “Prosperity Gospel” generates more false converts than saves anyone

Then you have those who receive the gospel, but they care more about the world than they care about God. As Jesus said “What does it profit you to gain the whole world and lose your soul” (Mark 8:36)

But there are some , the elect, who will receive the gospel and produce good fruit (Matthew 7) This is why it’s important we continue to share the good news of Jesus Christ (Matthew 28:19) even when the majority of the world will reject it, Amen!

Mark 4- Parable of The Sower

Hearken; Behold, there went out a sower to sow: And it came to pass, as he sowed, some fell by the way side, and the fowls of the air came and devoured it up. And some fell on stony ground, where it had not much earth; and immediately it sprang up, because it had no depth of earth: But when the sun was up, it was scorched; and because it had no root, it withered away. And some fell among thorns, and the thorns grew up, and choked it, and it yielded no fruit. And other fell on good ground, and did yield fruit that sprang up and increased; and brought forth, some thirty, and some sixty, and some an hundred. And he said unto them, He that hath ears to hear, let him hear. Mark 4:3-9

Today we take a look at Jesus’ parable of the Sower, now the nice thing about this parable is Jesus actually explains it at the end, so there is no doubt what he is referring to. This parable is about the way people respond to the gospel, some receive it and have faith, some hear it , believe it, then when times get tough fall away, some never receive the gospel in their heart ever! So which group do you belong in?

The seed is the Word of God, the gospel of Jesus Christ! This is why it’s important we preach the gospel , share the good news with others, we don’t know who is going to receive it or who’s going to leave it. However it’s our duty to be sowers of the good news as Jesus commanded us in the Great Commision (Matthew 28:19)

Notice how Jesus ends the Parable “Let those who have ears , let them hear” meaning those who have not hardened their hearts and deafened their ears to the gospel by the Holy Spirit, let them receive the Word of God and be brought to Christ!

The sower soweth the word. And these are they by the way side, where the word is sown; but when they have heard, Satan cometh immediately, and taketh away the word that was sown in their hearts. And these are they likewise which are sown on stony ground; who, when they have heard the word, immediately receive it with gladness; And have no root in themselves, and so endure but for a time: afterward, when affliction or persecution ariseth for the word’s sake, immediately they are offended. And these are they which are sown among thorns; such as hear the word, And the cares of this world, and the deceitfulness of riches, and the lusts of other things entering in, choke the word, and it becometh unfruitful. And these are they which are sown on good ground; such as hear the word, and receive it, and bring forth fruit, some thirtyfold, some sixty, and some an hundred. Mark 4:14-20

Jesus explains his parable, one thing you will notice about the groups, really there are two groups: false converts and Born Again Christians. The first 3 groups either reject the gospel or receive it on false terms. We see this alot today with “Prosperity Gospel” “Cult groups” or “New Age Christianity” They don’t believe in the real Jesus or understand the real gospel. They look for a worldly Jesus to obtain pleasure and possessions now

The last group are the Born Again believers, they receive the true gospel and produce good fruit. Remember Jesus said “A bad tree can’t produce good fruit” (Matthew 7) Also “We will be known by our Fruit” (Matthew 7) There is evidence of our Born Again conversion with Christ

Regardless it’s up to God who becomes saved , sow the seed, preach the gospel to everyone in Jesus name Amen!
