1 Timothy 3- Qualifications for Leaders in the Church Part 2

One that ruleth well his own house, having his children in subjection with all gravity; (For if a man know not how to rule his own house, how shall he take care of the church of God?) Not a novice, lest being lifted up with pride he fall into the condemnation of the devil. Moreover he must have a good report of them which are without; lest he fall into reproach and the snare of the devil. 1 Timothy 3:4-7

As we continue to look at the qualifications for an “overseer” , which is a common term shared among leaders in the Church such as Pastors, Elders, Bishops, these rules apply to all these leadership positions. The first thing we notice the correlation between family and the Church. As we talked about the structure of the family, (husband, wife, children) is the same in the Church. There is a structure and order to the family as well as the Church.

One of the qualifications is for the man to be able to manage his own household. If you want to get a good idea of what kind of leader your Pastor/Bishop/Elder would be, ask their spouse and children. You will get a real and honest depiction of this persons character. If this man’s homelife is a disaster, why would you think he would be able to manage a Church family? Now of course there are exceptions and alot of variables that apply to this, however we can generally get a good indication of someone based on their homelife

Another qualification is this leader should not be a new convert. We know often when people get saved or “come to Christ”, many new believers are on fire for The Lord. However a new convert can easily be confused and deceived by false doctrine. I’m sure most of us have experienced this during our walk with Christ. Your faith should have been tested and tried in the fire, when you become a leader of the Church, you will face heavy opposition from Satan and demons everywhere. You need someone who is prepared for the spiritual warfare they will endure, and be able to lead a community in their walk with Christ

The Apostle Paul mentions, they shouldn’t be a recent convert because “lifted up with pride , become conceited, and fall into condemnation of the devil” A new convert might like the idea or title or a leadership role in the Church, however these reasons are carnally driven and not led by the Holy Spirit. Satan likes to tempt us with pride, and eventually we will fall in sin. We need to make sure the leader is rooted in Christ, actually called by God to fill this position, not answering the call for financial gain or feeding their egos.

Finally, what kind of reputation does your Pastor/Elder/Bishop have with the outside community? What are people saying or what experiences have they had with them? We understand some people have good testimonies, but those testimonies should be old news, we shouldn’t be seeing the local Pastor as the local bar every Friday night. It loses all credibility to the Church and Christ, this person must have the mentality as a servant of Christ, to bring all glory to God in everything they do, especially their family, Church, and ministry, Amen!

1 Timothy 2- Qualifications of Leaders in the Church Part 1

This is a true saying, If a man desire the office of a bishop, he desireth a good work. A bishop then must be blameless, the husband of one wife, vigilant, sober, of good behaviour, given to hospitality, apt to teach; Not given to wine, no striker, not greedy of filthy lucre; but patient, not a brawler, not covetous; 1 Timothy 3:1-3

As we continue to work through the Epistles of Timothy, we see these are instructions on how we should run the Church. In the previous Chapter we looked over the order of the Church, now we are going to take a look at the qualifications for the leaders of the Church. The first thing we want to point out is the original Greek word “episkope” this word is translated as Bishop in the KJV, also translate as “overseer” “leader” This word basically covers any leadership role within the Church, such as Bishop, Pastor, Elder (Acts 20:17, Acts 20:28, Titus 1:5-9, 1 Peter 5)

So the qualifications that the Apostle Paul is going to mention, under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, applies to all Pastors, Bishops, Elders, any leaders within the Church. The first qualification we see is the “husband of one wife”. We went over Pauls teaching in 1 Timothy Chapter 2, woman are not to have spiritual authority over men, also here the overseer is to be the husband of one wife. With these scriptures, I think its a clear case God’s design for the Church was to have male Pastors, Bishops, Elders, ect. Again this does not mean woman are not as qualified, its just Gods design for the Church as it is Gods design for the family and society.

The qualifications are also for the overseer to be “blameless”, “sober minded”, “of good behavior”, “hospitable”, “able to teach” “not give to wine (alcoholic), “not violent”, “not greedy” and be “gentle”  Now as we look through this list, we wonder how can anyone meet all these qualifications? I’m sure we as leaders of the Church fall short somewhere, however the Apostle Paul is emphasizing the standard God has put on the leaders of the Church. This is not a role or position that should be taken lightly, this is not a calling you just dabble in, when you step into the pulpit, there should be a “Fear of God” upon you, that you are trying to be a servant of Christ to the best of your abilities.

We see all around Christianity today, fallen leaders, not only have the disgraced their families, they have disgraced their Church community, they have also disgraced Christ. Everything we do is a representation of Christ. As the Apostle James said “My brethren, let not many of you become teachers, knowing that we shall receive a stricter judgment. (James 3:1) Yes the Pastor, Bishop, Elder, and leaders of the Church will be held under stricter judgement for their life

Many people feel they are “called to ministry” but is that truly the will of God? Feelings are not truth, if the Word of God written by the Holy Spirit disqualifies you, you really need to pray and ask God is this really the calling place upon my life?

We will continue working through this text on our next post…God bless

1 Timothy 2- Women Role in the Church

Let the woman learn in silence with all subjection. But I suffer not a woman to teach, nor to usurp authority over the man, but to be in silence. For Adam was first formed, then Eve. And Adam was not deceived, but the woman being deceived was in the transgression. Notwithstanding she shall be saved in childbearing, if they continue in faith and charity and holiness with sobriety. 1 Timothy 2:11-15

Today we are going to take a look at, probably the most controversial teaching by the Apostle Paul, or maybe even the most controversial teaching in the entire Bible, the role of women in the Church. The first thing to establish is the authority of this teaching, Paul was under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, if you reject Paul’s teachings, you are rejecting the Word of God. If you reject Paul as an Apostle, you reject over half of the New Testament, its a downward spiral. This teaching by Paul is the Word of God and authoritative.

The Apostle Paul also taught on this subject in his Epistle to the Corinthians (1 Corinthians 14) I also did a response video to our Brother Damons writings on this topic also, as he disagrees with my position, however we still have great love and respect for one another as brothers in Christ. The more I have chewed on this topic and scriptures over the years, I really believe this issue is greatly misunderstood primarily by the influence of liberalism and feminism that have crept into the Church over the decades.

As you walk through these scriptures , its very plain and clear, this teaching is about roles and authorities within the structure of the Church and not about someones personal talent or ability. The Bible is clear woman are filled with the Holy Spirit just like men, (Acts 2:17) and have the capabilities that men do, the question is about role and authority. Just as the structure of the family, the man is the father and the spiritual head of the family, (1 Corinthians 11:3) While some woman in todays culture, try to replace the man as the “father” it doesn’t work , and naturally it can’t happen. This is the same in the Church family, the man has spiritual authority as being leader of the Church under Christ

The Apostle Paul begins “Let the woman learn in silence with all subjection” Remaining silent is a sign of respect and authority. When a teacher is teaching class, students remain silent out of respect for their teacher. This doesn’t necessarily mean the teacher knows more than the student, however the Teacher is in a position or role of authority over their students. I think its this basic and simple, however we try to overcomplicate this topic

“For Adam was formed first, then Eve” anyone who argues this is a cultural issue is rebuked by this teaching. The Apostle Paul interjects Creation into the role and order of the Church. Everyone and every culture is impacted and influenced by creation, its as simple as Adam (man) was created directly from God. Eve the woman was created from Adam not God. There is a role and structure in creation and the Church. To imply the woman is in authoritative equality with men, would to disregard the Word of God and Creation.

1 Timothy 2- Order in the Church

I will therefore that men pray every where, lifting up holy hands, without wrath and doubting. In like manner also, that women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with shamefacedness and sobriety; not with broided hair, or gold, or pearls, or costly array; But (which becometh women professing godliness) with good works 1 Timothy 2:8-10

So now we see the Apostle Paul under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit is giving instructions on the order of the Church. We worship a God of law and order, not a God of chaos and confusion. There is order and instruction in Gods design for everything, just as it was in the beginning in Creation. God had structure and order with Adam and Eve, and this model is to be implemented in the Church and throughout society. Any deviation from this structure leads to disaster as we are seeing in todays society and the Church.

God is calling all men to be Holy, to be set apart for Christ , and to be leaders of the Church. As the Apostle Paul says here “ I will therefor that men pray everywhere” The original Greek word here translated as pray can also mean worship. We need Men of God, who are Born Again and have a relationship with God. We need men who have a relationship with Christ, to rise up and lead the body of Christ and their families. Notice the Apostle Paul says “everywhere” the Men of God are to lead worship everywhere they go. Not just in the sanctuary on a Sunday morning, but also at the dinner table during the week, and everywhere. Problem is many men have abandoned their calling and role by God to pursue the lusts of this world

These Men of God are also to lead the Church “without wrath or doubting” As Jesus said “A kingdom divided shall not stand” (Matthew 12:25) These men need to be real leaders for Christ, and not dividers. They need to be Shepherds of the Church and keeping the flock together and safe, not allowing the wolves to enter from within and devour the flock. They must also truly be Born Again and have faith in Christ. If they are weak in the faith, they will be weak leaders.

Woman are to dress modestly and not bring dishonor to The Lord or themselves. The worship services during this culture, had become more of a fashion show, women wanted to display their wealth and beauty, this is very common in todays Church also. However the focus should be on The Lord Jesus Christ and not ourselves. ,We should not be bringing attention to ourselves but bring attention to The Lord. If we have wealth, we should be be flaunting it among others, be humble and respectful to your fellow brothers and sisters in Christ.

As the Apostle Paul says “woman who profess godliness with good works” Woman of God should present themselves as servants of Christ. Not dressing to be seductive or boastful, but present themselves as respectful to The Lord and their fellow brothers and sisters in Christ, as a sister. This can apply to the men also.

1 Timothy 2- One Mediator

For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus; Who gave himself a ransom for all, to be testified in due time. Whereunto I am ordained a preacher, and an apostle, (I speak the truth in Christ, and lie not;) a teacher of the Gentiles in faith and verity. 1 Timothy 2:5-7

The world will tell you there are many ways to God, the world will tell you all roads lead to God, however all of this is a false deception by Satan. There is only One way to God is thats through Jesus Christ, as Christ said “I am the way, the truth , and the life, nobody can come to the Father (God) except through me” (John 14:6) Don’t be deceived by the world, listen to the words of our Lord Jesus Christ, God who became flesh, to deliver you from sin and death!

As the Apostle Paul reveals to us “there is One God, and One mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus” There is no other way to God except through Jesus Christ, anyone who teaches another gospel , let them be accursed (Galatians 1:8) In ancient times, even today, you can’t just expect to walk up to a King or a President and be allowed to speak in their presence. No, you need a mediator, you need someone who verifies and approves you can stand before the King. This is the same with God, we are not worthy to stand in the presence of a Holy God. Nobody is worthy to stand before God, except for our Lord Jesus Christ, the sinless Lamb of God, who took away the sins of the world (John 1:29)

As the Apostle Paul also said “For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him “ (2 Corinthians 5:21) Jesus Christ justified us before our Heavenly Father so we can be in his presence, so we can be reconciled back to God, so we can become children of God. That’s why Jesus Christ is the only way to salvation, nobody else can do this for you except Christ. Nobody else can atone for your sin except Christ, the sinless lamb of God. And nobody else can mediate between you and God, except Christ, the Son of God

Why did Christ come to Earth? As the Apostle Paul says here “Who gave himself a ransom for all” Jesus Christ came to reconcile you back to the Father, Jesus Christ came to give you the Holy Spirit, and Christ came to ransom for all who will repent and put their faith in Christ. Nobody else can do this, nobody else can be the ransom for your sin, so why are you praying to them? Why are you putting your faith and trust in anyone else but Jesus Christ alone?

The Apostle Paul was a preacher of the Gentiles, to teach us the gospel or good news of Christ, that we can all be saved through Christ alone, that we can all become children of God through Christ alone, that there is salvation is no other name under heaven (Acts 4:12) except the One Mediator Jesus Christ, Amen!

1 Timothy 2- Pray for Everyone

I exhort therefore, that, first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks, be made for all men; For kings, and for all that are in authority; that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty. For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Saviour; Who will have all men to be saved, and to come unto the knowledge of the truth1 Timothy 2:1-4

Here’s a question, have you prayed today? You might say, I don’t know what to pray for, well as the Bible says here “pray for everyone” The Apostle Paul here is instructing the Church to pray for everyone “be made for all men”. Often times people like to pray for themselves, but have you prayed for other people? Bigger question is have you prayed for your enemies? Have you prayed for the lost? Have you prayed for the Holy Spirit to reach the hearts of the unsaved?

The Church of Ephesus was doing a bad job at evangelism, it was apparent they were not focused on the unsaved, so the Apostle Paul under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, instructed them to pray and make intercession for everyone. I think the majority of todays Church has done the same thing, most Christians forgot or don’t know the Great Commision commanded by Christ “Go and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, Son , and Holy Spirit” (Matthew 28:19)

Most Christian communities get to self involved, they forget there is a whole harvest field out there ready to be plowed with the Word of God. Or alot of Christians have no heart for the lost. How often have you shared the gospel this week? Did you tell anyone about Jesus? Have you offered to pray for people? Prayer is a power intercession between Heaven and Earth, don’t forsake the lost

Here’s another question do you prayer for the governments and authorities? Theres alot of political division and tension in our country and world, and we know the governments for the most part are oppressing the people, so heres a radical idea, pray for them. Remember as the saying goes, its doesn’t matter who the president is, Jesus is King. God is in complete control, of even the governments, pray for Gods will to be done and the Holy Spirit to change hearts and minds

As the Apostle Paul says “strive to live in peace with everyone” (Romans 12:18) , thats what the Apostle says here also “that we may lead a quiet and peaceful life, in all godliness and holiness” As the people of God we live in peace and set apart from the world. While we may not agree with the governments, we are not at war with them, we live as good citizens, as the body of Christ here on Earth, the Salt and Light Christ has called us to be. Why? “This is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Savior” We live in obedience to Christ and not the world, we live to please God and serve him.

Now the question is, why do we do any of this? As the Apostle Paul said “who wants all people to be saved and come to the knowledge of truth” God wants everyone to be saved and to hear the gospel of Jesus Christ.  This is your marching orders as the Church, fulfill the Great Commission, pray for everyone small and great, in Jesus name Amen

1 Timothy 1- Fight the good Fight

This charge I commit unto thee, son Timothy, according to the prophecies which went before on thee, that thou by them mightest war a good warfare; Holding faith, and a good conscience; which some having put away concerning faith have made shipwreck: Of whom is Hymenaeus and Alexander; whom I have delivered unto Satan, that they may learn not to blaspheme. 1 Timothy 1:18-20

Being a Christian is not for the faint of heart, as the Apostle Paul is preparing Timothy “that you may “wage the good warfare” or “fight the battle well” The Apostle Paul is preparing Timothy for spiritual warfare to come. To fight the good fight of faith, to stand strong in the face of evil opposition. This is the message we can take away also, fight the good fight of faith in the face of blasphemy and evil that is invading our Churches today, stand your ground, don’t compromise!

Now to back up a little, the interesting thing is it was a prophecy to Paul that TImothy would take over as leader of the Church. As Paul says “I commit unto thee, son Timothy, according to the prophecies made concerning you” Timothy wasn’t selected because of his credentials or because of social favor, Timothy was chosen by God to continue the work Paul had started. When selecting leadership in the Church, do we ask for the Holy Spirit’s guidance?

This next verse I think is very relevant to state of the Church today “holding faith and a good conscience, which some have rejected and concerning the faith some have suffered shipwreck” If we are to describe the current state of the Church today, I think a shipwreck might be a good description. Many Christians have not held to the faith in good conscience, they have compromised the true gospel, they have compromised the foundational doctrines of the Church, the have compromised their own souls for the sake of unity , money, and power. In return, their faith has become shipwrecked, can you in good conscience stand before The Lord and say I fought the good fight of faith?

Now next the Apostle Paul has called out some false teachers in the Church by name, Hymenaeus and Alexander, now the Church today would say “thats not Christian” But Paul being a shepherd of the Church is protecting the flock from the wolves, its very Biblical and Christian to call out and rebuke false teachers that have invaded the Church. To stand by and allow wolves to devour the Church is blasphemy and the blood is on your hands also. Remember this is a spiritual warfare, this is not a country club, this is a battle you have agreed to enter.

These false teachers have “been delivered unto Satan so that they may learn not to blaspheme” they are apostates , driven by their own lusts and greed, and have been handed over to Satan to be tormented for their wickedness. As the Apostle James taught “My brethren, let not many of you become teachers, knowing that we shall receive a stricter judgment.” (James 3:1)

Fight the good fight of faith, stand strong in the face of blasphemy and wickedness, remain in good conscience with our Lord and God, Jesus Christ, Amen!

1 Timothy 1- Our Testimony

And I thank Christ Jesus our Lord, who hath enabled me, for that he counted me faithful, putting me into the ministry; Who was before a blasphemer, and a persecutor, and injurious: but I obtained mercy, because I did it ignorantly in unbelief. And the grace of our Lord was exceeding abundant with faith and love which is in Christ Jesus. This is a faithful saying, and worthy of all acceptation, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners; of whom I am chief. Howbeit for this cause I obtained mercy, that in me first Jesus Christ might shew forth all longsuffering, for a pattern to them which should hereafter believe on him to life everlasting. Now unto the King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only wise God, be honour and glory for ever and ever. Amen. 1 Timothy 1:12-17

Have you shared your personal testimony with anyone recently? Have you told people what Jesus Christ has done for you? Our personal testimonies are the most powerful evidence of Gods power and salvation. People can refute the existence of God, however they can’t refute your personal testimony. They can’t deny the evidence of Gods salvation presented before them.

This is what the Apostle Paul is sharing with us, he is a walking testimony for Christ. As Paul said “I thank Christ Jesus our Lord, who has enabled me, for that he counted me faithful, putting me into the ministry” Notice God is the one who qualifies and calls us for ministry, its not man. There are many people in the pulpit today, with seminary degrees, that its clear God has never called to be there. God is the one who calls and qualifies us, if your calling is not supported by scripture, then your calling was not from God

And as the Apostle Paul states, God can use and transform anyone who wants for his service. The Apostle Paul humbly admits “who was before a blasphemer, and a persecutor, and a injurious or violent man, but I obtained mercy” The Apostle Paul went from persecuting the Church to planting Churches all throughout Asia Minor. People looked at Paul as a wicked and depraved man, who hated and killed Christians, but he became Born Again in Christ, Paul became a New Creation in Christ, on the Road to Damascus, he literally had a “Come to Jesus” moment, and Paul was transformed by the Holy Spirit.

Some would say “Paul doesn’t deserve mercy” but as Paul says here “the grace of our Lord was exceeding abundant” none of us deserve mercy, however this is the grace of God, that through Jesus Christ we can be forgiven and saved. “With faith and love which is in Christ Jesus”. We are saved by grace through faith in our Lord Jesus Christ (Ephesians 2:8) Its not by our own works or our own power, its by the power of God through our Lord Jesus Christ

As the Apostle Paul ends “Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners”, Christ came into this world to save you and me, just like he came for Paul, and not only saved us , but transformed us to be Born Again, Amen!

1 Timothy 1- The Law is Good

But we know that the law is good if one uses it lawfully, knowing this: that the law is not made for a righteous person, but for the lawless and insubordinate, for the ungodly and for sinners, for the unholy and profane, for murderers of fathers and murderers of mothers, for manslayers, for fornicators, for sodomites, for kidnappers, for liars, for perjurers, and if there is any other thing that is contrary to sound doctrine, according to the glorious gospel of the blessed God which was committed to my trust. 1 Timothy 1:8-11

When people think about the Ten Commandments, or the Moral Law of God, they often view it in a negative perspective. However as the Apostle Paul says here “The Law is good if one uses it lawfully” So what does the Apostle mean by this? How can The Law be “good” when The Law brings death (2 Corinthians 3:6) Well as the Apostle said “if one uses it lawfully”

Without The Law of God nobody would ever know that they are sinners in need of a Savior. As the Bible defines Sin is Lawlessness (1 John 3:4) You are a sinner because you break the moral laws of God. And ultimately this impacts everyones as the Bible says “We have all sinned and fallen short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23)

When Jesus was speaking with the Rich Young Ruler (Mark 10:17-27), he asked Jesus “How may I inherit eternal life”? Jesus first made the statement, “Nobody is Good (Morally excellent, sinless) except God” (Mark 10:18) Revealing we are all sinners, but also revealing Jesus Deity as God incarnate. And then Jesus goes on to list some of the Ten Commandments, why? Because the Moral Law of God (Ten Commandments) is a mirror that reflects our sinful nature and our desperate need for a Savior

As the Apostle Paul says here “The Law is not made for a righteous person, but for the Lawless” The purpose of The Law is not to make yourself righteous, its to show you the nature of God and how much you need Jesus Christ. There were false teachers during the time of Paul that would use The Law to preach a false gospel, there are many still today who do the same thing. They basically were teaching Jesus wasn’t enough to be saved, you needed circumcision plus Jesus then you could be saved. Anytime we add something because Christ, it becomes a false gospel

The Apostle Paul then goes on to list sins of the lawless, and since we are in “Pride Month” I just want to point out Paul under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit mentions sodomites, which our modern word would be homosexuals. I’m bringing this to your attention because many false teachers today claim, The Bible never forbids homosexuality. It’s clear here and other passages such as Romans 1 and 1 Corinthians 6.

However we have a living hope, Jesus Christ, as the Apostle Paul also said “For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.” (2 Corinthians 5:21) Amen!

1 Timothy 1- False Teachers

Now the end of the commandment is charity out of a pure heart, and of a good conscience, and of faith unfeigned: From which some having swerved have turned aside unto vain jangling; Desiring to be teachers of the law; understanding neither what they say, nor whereof they affirm. 1 Timothy 1:5-7

These instructions given to Timothy by the Apostle Paul, remind me of the instructions he gave to Titus, “avoid stupid arguments” (Titus 3:9-11) “For which some have strayed, having turned aside to idle talk” Many wolves and false teachers want to implement false teachings into the Church, to create confusion and division. They don’t care about the truth of God, because they don’t have the love of God, they are lovers of themselves.

This is what the Apostle Paul is stating in the beginning here “the purpose of this commandment is love from a pure heart” False teachers will always state “Jesus loves you” and that’s correct, but do you love Jesus? Do you want to do the will of God? Are you being led and sanctified by the Holy Spirit? Jesus said “If you love me , keep my commandments” (John 14:15) “From a good conscience” are you truly trying to please The Lord or are you trying to please people? We are not perfect people, but God reads our hearts, He knows whether we are trying to worship Him in Spirit and Truth

As the Apostle Paul describes these false teachers “desiring to be teachers of the Law” we still see this today, many elevating themselves wanting the power and authority of a religious leader to control and manipulate the Church. But they preach a false gospel, they teach a works based salvation that leads to a dead end. Their true love is for themselves, to fulfill the desires of their flesh and not the will of God.

And as the Apostle Paul says “understanding neither what they say or what they affirm” These false teachers misquote scripture and don’t even understand the scripture themselves. Why? Because they don’t have the Holy Spirit, they are unregenerated, led by the flesh. As the Apostle Paul said “the natural man doesn’t understand the things of the Spirit of God” (1 Corinthians 2:14) The false teacher can’t comprehend the truth of scripture, they are blinded by their pride and flesh

These false teachers mislead many , they try to divide the flock, that’s why they must be rebukes and removed from the congregation. “A little leaven leavens the whole lump” (Galatians 5:9) Amen!
