I agree that he didn’t really see his father, but a demon. And that the Holy Spirit gave him a sense that he shouldn’t go with him. I hope he comes to faith in Jesus someday.
There’s a book I think you would find very interesting, entitled “To Hell and Back.” It was written by an ER doctor, his eyewitness accounts of people – Christians and unbelievers – who have been clinically dead and their recounting of their experiences moments after they were resuscitated. There were unbelievers who screamed in terror when they first came to, but who weeks later had changed their stories when interviewed by an author writing a book about near-death experiences. His theory was that these people couldn’t deal with what they’d seen, so their minds revised the story to make it more bearable. Unfortunately, this book is out of print, but you might be able to find it in a library or for sale second-hand.
