Trinity (Isaiah 9:6)

For a child will be born to us, a son will be given to us; And the government will rest on His shoulders; And His name will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Eternal Father, Prince of Peace. Isaiah 9:6

Many people would say that the Trinity was a man-made doctrine started by Constantine in around 300 A.D. However when you really study the Old Testament, you can see the Triune God is displayed throughout the scriptures.

This article I’m just going to be focusing on the prophecy from Isaiah. This prophecy was obviously written 700 years before Christ and about 1,000 years before Constantine, so this is not man-made doctrine

Everyone would agree this prophecy is revealing the Messiah (Jesus) will be born to save humanity. But lets analyze the titles given to Christ

Wonderful Counselor – I believe this reveals the Holy Spirit, notice when Jesus talks about the Holy Spirit in John 14:16 the original Greek word is Parakletos which means Counselor. The Holy Spirit is the Wonderful Counselor

And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Counselor to be with you forever. John 14:16

Eternal Father – It’s very clear that God (Yahweh) is our Heavenly Father. Throughout Jesus ministry he always addressed God as Father and him as his Son. It also tells us through Christ we become Children of God

But now, O LORD, You are our Father, We are the clay, and You our potter; And all of us are the work of Your hand. Isaiah 64:8

Prince of Peace – I think its obvious Jesus is the Prince of Peace. When Jesus was born, the angels announced Jesus would bring peace to the world. How? By his work done at the cross, defeating Sin and Death and reuniting us with the Father

Glory to God in the highest, And on earth peace among men with whom He is pleased.” Luke 2:14

Mighty God – Finally we have the big title of “Mighty God” If you agree this prophecy is about Christ, then you would have to agree Jesus is God. We already know that the Father is God. Also add the Holy Spirit is God (Acts 5). Might God is the title shared among the Godhead (Father , Son, and Holy Spirit)

“Thus says the LORD, the King of Israel and his Redeemer, the LORD of hosts: ‘I am the first and I am the last, And there is no God besides Me Isaiah 44:6

Interesting enough Jesus calls himself the First and Last also…also calls himself Redeemer

Always love your posts. Sometimes it makes me pull out my bible to further study your references, like today. I want to address a passage that has been a point I use for proving the Trinity. In Genesis 1:26, right at the first of the Bible it says “Let US make man in OUR image”. NIV Another new awesomeness I ran across recently in a bible study that I mentioned in my blog was about the names of God and one was when Jesus called to Abba Father – it was translated as Dearest Daddy. What an awesome and tender way to refer God. Some may see it as disrespect from father to daddy but I see it as more intimate and if anything we need to be more intimate and close to God. Thank you for your thoughts.

It is now 2021, in the early 1990’s our church the Worldwide Church of God was going through some major changes especially if regards to the Trinity…this past weekend I gave a communion message about a paradigm shift I had regarding who resided in Jesus, just the part of God who represented Jesus or the Entire God Head…the Trinity…well the last week before our big split, since many did not like the Truth and wanted to hold onto Armstrongism, I had mentioned to a high ranking minister about the title in Isiah 9:6 Everlasting or Eternal Father…he told me I had no clue what I was talking about.. .now July 2021 and last week the Holy Spirit brought back to me this question and answered it with the face Isiah 9:3 was about the Trinity….what I gave during Comunion was almost verbatim to your post, even though it was not until after the service that I wanted to see if anyone else saw this…my new paradigm is that when Philip said show us the father, Jesus said…He is looking back at you…and when the nails were driven in His hands the Holy Spirit, Wonderful Counselor, felt every blow…and when the nails were driven into His feet, the Father felt every strike from the hammer. …it is nice to see the Holy Spirit still teaching His people 😃

Wonder comment. Thank you. The Holy Spirit will lead us to His truth again and again…regardless of who may listen. His concerns is are we(individual) listening to His teaching. And if we are then He will teach us, those who will listen to His truth.
