Countdown to Christmas Day 23

“‘But you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah; for out of you will come a ruler who will shepherd my people Israel.'” Matthew 2:6

God works in mysterious ways; for out of the little town of Bethlehem the King of Kings was born. This was probably a surprise not only to the world but also to Joseph and Mary.  Due to a census the Roman Empire was enforcing they reluctantly made the trip to Bethlehem. (Luke 2: 4-5) “And Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judaea, unto the city of David, which is called Bethlehem; (because he was of the house and lineage of David: be taxed with Mary his espoused wife, being great with child.)

Although at the time they might have thought this was a setback this was actually a setup to fulfill  the Messiah prophecy’s from the Old Testament and also the Will of God. (Micah 5:2) “But thou, Bethlehem Ephratah, though thou be little among the thousands of Judah, yet out of thee shall he come forth unto me that is to be ruler in Israel; whose goings forth have been from of old, from everlasting.”

We know Jesus is the “Good Shepherd” the scripture refers to.(John 10:11) “I am the good shepherd: the good shepherd giveth his life for the sheep.” He came not to condemn the world but to save it. (John3:17) As we know from the “Parable of the Lost Sheep” (Luke 15: 1-7) Jesus came to find and save us and then rejoice for our return. “I tell you that in the same way there will be more rejoicing in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who do not need to repent.”

We are all lost sheep, vulnerable to the world and the predators that roam among us. Rejoice for our “Good Shepherd” has been born and sent to save us all. As Jesus said not only did he come to save us but he also laid down his life. Rejoice for our King is born Merry Christmas Amen
